/ @SenToomey , it is hard to believe that is has been nearly 40 years since you and I made our first trip to Washington as part of #CloseUp_DC in February 1980, where for a week we would see Washington from the inside.
/ @SenToomey, on our first night, the keynote address was given by former Congressman Brook Hays (D-AR), who lost his seat in Congress because he chose the right side of history in the battle over integrating Little Rock's Central High School. washingtonpost.com/archive/politi…
/ @SenToomey As he spoke that night, I remember how proud Congressman Hays was of the fact that President Kennedy said that "If I write a sequel to 'Profiles in Courage,' you will be Chapter One."
/ @SenToomey When Brook Hays died late the next year, columnist David Broder noted: If Congress is to remain an institution to which alumni can return with pride and which youngsters can view without cynicism, today's lawmakers will need the qualities Brooks Hays exemplified.
/ @SenToomey As I write this, you sit on the Senate floor as today's impeachment session concludes. As a classmate, I am proud that your career has taken you to this moment, but . . . #impeachment
/ @SenToomey you have decided to vote to conclude an impeachment trial without evidence for the first time ever in history and dismissed the trial as a mere attempt to discredit the President. #impeachment video.foxnews.com/v/6128422482001
/ @SenToomey It was President Trump who discredited the office when he undermined our national security for his own political gain and then took the position that a co-equal branch of government has no right to investigate him. #impeachment
/ @SenToomey Are you really going to embrace Prof. Dershowitz's view that repeals the lessons of Watergate and restores the Nixonian presidency? If this isn't impeachable, what is? If blocking all investigations isn't obstruction, what is? #impeachment
/ @SenToomey I'm not naive enough to think a Twitter chat from one La Salle valedictorian to another will sway you, but as you enter the Senate tomorrow I hope you will think of the Brook Hays and remember a time before tribalism when members of Congress acted with courage.
