Last night 500 people came to be together in Oxford at the Town Hall, because we wanted to be together at such a difficult time in our nation’s history.

We were all there because this country has failed. Brexit is a failure of our education system and of progressive politics.

The media is of course complicit in this failure.

We never learnt enough what the EU achieved for all its citizens.

From peace and democracy to workers rights, environmental protections and equality.

Without question the EU has been a force for good in the world and a force for good for its citizens.

But so many ppl are ignorant of this and will continue to be so, unless we start looking outwards and talk about the achievements of the EU, both in the past and ongoing.

I had the privilege last wk to visit the EU parliament, where you see progressive politics in action: this is not like our 19th century winner takes all, us versus them politics. This is a politics that seeks allegiances & the common ground.

We could learn so much from the EU.

So, if one of our biggest freedoms is the way we react to things...

Let’s take this disaster & turn it around.

Education -we all, & especially our young ppl-need to know what the EU has achieved & continues to achieve.

Politics - we need to do our politics better. FPTP is backward, encourages division & denies consensus. It needs to change.

We achieve so much more when we work with our friends and allies.
