Boris Johnson's just slung the world's largest dead cat on the table to distract from Brexit: a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland. To be built over the watery grave of millions of tonnes of munitions, because a bad job can always be done worse.

Grant Schapps was talking this morning about petrol and diesel car sales possibly being banned as early as 2032. But that leaves almost literally no time at all, because a lot of car buyers think about the long-term value of their vehicles and 12 years is the blink of an eye.
It's vitally important to transition to electric vehicles. But with the auto industry already struggling in the UK much more than in other countries, do we really want to add one of the most draconian environmental regimes in the world on top of Brexit and the diesel scandal?
Thing is, people will definitely care about resale value 6-7 years ahead, so 2032 is more like 2025. But it takes years to retool and ramp up production, especially for a shift as dramatic as internal combustion to electric. So the real impact will be a disastrous lack of choice.

The UK Government released a Brexit "transition check" tool! Answer a series of questions to find out what you have to do to get ready for the end of the transition period. It spits out an alarmingly long list of tasks for even the most mundane situations.

It has gems like this, where you have the (implicit) option of saying you're never going to travel outside the borders of the UK ever again for the rest of your life...
The advice it lists at the end is mainly just reheated versions of the "no deal" advice from months ago, but with a few words changed. Nevertheless, it's worth doing the exercise, if only to see just how drastically "full-on Brexit" will hit us.

2. Trade talks will be far from easy: France (like rest of EU) knows UK wants to diverge - the key concern for France is how to prevent divergence from (i) undercutting EU business & (ii) disrupting trade flows. Trade-off is simple: lower standards, reduced market access.

(1) I wonder if American audiences fully grasp the enormity of what #BorisJohnson has done by asking the Queen to suspend #Parliament. This is way more extreme than if #Trump asked #MitchMcConnell to delay the Senate session to avoid an unpopular vote. cnn.com/europe/live-ne…
(2) To put this #ConstitutionalCrisis in perspective, you have to remember that the #UK's parliamentary supremacy vests far more power in their legislature than we've ever given to ours. Under the American system, the Constitution is supreme. Under the UK system, Parliament is.
(3) Things have gotten trickier in recent years as #Parliament delegated some power to other institutions: regional assemblies in #Scotland and #NorthernIreland, a Supreme Court (Lords use to be the highest court), and made other structural changes. see: talkingpoliticspodcast.com/blog/2019/168-…

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!
