Voter suppression and election mismanagement are alive and well in #Alabama. Check out our new report released today detailing how Alabama laws and policies create and perpetuate obstacles to the ballot box.

Despite #Alabama being at the epicenter of the #VotingRights movement of the 1960s, the state remains one of the most difficult places in our nation for an eligible voter to register and successfully cast a ballot. #AlabamaVotes splcenter.org/20200203/alive…
Since #SCOTUS gutted #Section5 of the #VotingRightsAct, #Alabama and localities have made it harder to vote by requiring photo ID to vote, closing polling places in predominantly Black counties and purging hundreds of thousands of people from voter rolls. splcenter.org/20200203/alive…
While other states are working to make voting simple and more accessible, #Alabama lags behind with its burdensome and antiquated absentee ballot law and non-existent early voting opportunities. #AlabamaVotes #VotingRights splcenter.org/20200203/alive…
Early voting reduces stress on the voting infrastructure, makes #ElectionDay lines shorter, gives poll workers more experience and provides more time to prevent/correct errors at polling sites. @AlaSecOfState @JohnHMerrill refuses make early voting an option for #Alabama voters.
To make things more complicated, #All67 counties in #Alabama have their own process for election administration that creates a recipe for errors and confusion. This bureaucracy is difficult for both voters and @AlaSecOfState @JohnHMerrill’s office to navigate.
The problems with Alabama’s election system are worsened by a lack of transparency that prevents accountability. Because of Alabama’s weak open records laws, many are forced to take @AlaSecOfState @JohnHMerrill’s word on voter data. splcenter.org/20200203/alive…
.@AlaSecOfState @JohnHMerrill’s office often touts misleading voter registration numbers. His claim that 96% of all eligible Black #Alabama voters are registered to vote is unsubstantiated and at odds with the U.S. Census Bureau’s data. #VotingRights #AlabamaVotes
The same is true of @AlaSecOfState @JohnHMerrill’s claim that 94% of all eligible #Alabama voters are registered. If true, that would be a historic achievement that no state, even those with far friendlier voter registration policies, has accomplished. #VotingRights #AlabamaVotes
The only way for the public to check @AlaSecOfState @JohnHMerrill’s numbers is to obtain a copy of the state’s voter file. At upwards of $35,000, it costs more than many #Alabama voters make in a year. #AlabamaVotes #VotingRights splcenter.org/20200203/alive…
Just as #Alabama is an outlier in its voter suppression tactics and election mismanagement, the cost of its voter file is also out of step with other states that provide the voter file for free or for a more reasonable fee. #AlabamaVotes #VotingRights splcenter.org/20200203/alive…
It is past time for #Alabama to change its reputation from being one of the most difficult places for voters to engage in our democracy to one of the most welcoming. Voters in #All67 counties deserve convenient access to vote in a transparent process. #AlabamaVotes #VotingRights
No eligible voter should be prevented from voting. You deserve a voice in your local, state, and federal elections. Alabama’s voter registration deadline is Feb. 17 for the March 3 #ElectionDay. Verify your info or register to vote at tinyurl.com/AlabamaVotes.
If you have trouble registering to vote in #Alabama or another state in the #DeepSouth, let us know. #VotingRights #AlabamaVotes #GOTV splcenter.org/tell-us-your-v…
