This is a common view on the left but it’s just not true.

The right has lost as much, and arguably far more, than it’s won. Obamacare is law. Gay marriage is a right. Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security have grown in scale and generosity.
Last week, I heard a lot of talk about Trump having his best week ever, because he was not literally removed from office and was polling at almost, but not quite, 50%.

The standards for a successful GOP presidency have fallen way too far.
There’s an argument that the right cares less about big legislative achievements than the left, because the left is the party of government and wants to do big things through government.

I don’t fully buy it - conservatives wanted the Ryan budget, for instance - but maybe.
Either way, the idea that the left would celebrate the kind of success the right has had is wrong.

Obama got far more done than Trump by this point in his presidency, but for most liberals, it wasn’t nearly enough, and they were correct.
It’s only because the failures of one’s own movement loom large, and the successes of one’s opponent’s movement hurt so badly, that the left believes it can mirror the right and win. But it can’t. It needs to do far better to build the world it wants.
