As a label, "socialism" is unpopular, particularly with older voters, because it brings to mind the planned economies and totalitarianism of the 20th century. But Sanders tends to be pretty popular, because that's clearly not what he intends.
Sanders’s vulnerabilities lurk in the unpopular parts of his platform: tens of trillions in implied tax increases, abolishing 160 million private insurance plans by government fiat, decriminalizing unauthorized border crossing.
But lots of liberal Democrats have those vulnerabilities. One thing Sanders has, as a strength, is this unusual capacity to be both to be both an insider and a critic of the political system at the same time.
