Here is my thing for aspiring writers.

It’s important to get feedback, especially when starting. But pick a few readers you trust. The more people you ask, the more the advice will drift towards the center, the inoffensive, the safest route.

1/
You will run into a LOT of people whose sole input will be good make YOUR thing more like all the things that came before. And they are not being malicious, they’re trying to help.

But the effect compiles in an insidious way, like sanding off the teeth on a house key. 2/
Your work becomes more predictable and banal, but you never really unlock a meaningful reaction in the reader.

There’s already a Die Hard. There’s already a Harry Potter.

And they each have a million bland, bastard children. 3/

Heh.

My feelings about this stuff are complicated.

I believe there is such a thing as superhero glamour, and I love it. And I believe having characters of all stripes looking hot (in a huge variety of ways, not just the same tired penthouse poses) is awesome and inclusive.
But I also believe it can be done badly, like any aspect of comics or media.if it’s inappropriate to character, it is jarring and gross.

But I don’t like to police what people find hot, either. I think if people want a book that’s ALL that, fine, let them have that book.
But it can suck when that’s what the artist draws at just thre wrong moment or with just the wrong character.

I like comics to be unsavory, I’ve said it a million times. I like them to be not-quite-tamed, not-quite-respectable.

I get that not everyone agreess, that’s fine.

Okay, I want to have a talk about one aspect of the @birdsofpreywb movie that I was withholding judgment on, that did bug me. I think it’s pretty obvious I loved it, but I do have a sizable gripe.

However, that is only meaningful in a larger context.

So mute this, maybe. :)
All right. I am looking at this from an unusual pov.

When I wrote BOP, I was so obnoxiously and fiercely protective of the characters that I likely made editors want to look for new careers. I would fight if they were portrayed even REMOTELY off-model, even in major crossovers.
And to this day, these characters are so important to me that I buy every action figure, I still have a little warm feeling every time I see even a drawing of any of them.

In that regard, I am a bad potential audience member for a movie that changes everything.

Summers in Detroit are too fucking hot, Hank thinks, on a particularly miserable, humid July night. He remembers them being hot and miserable when he was a kid, especially that summer the a/c broke and his parents couldn't afford to fix it for a month. He'd felt like he was
melting every night as he tried to sleep, but he knows it's even hotter now. Just a bit warmer, every year.
Still, Sumo needs to go out; he does better with a real walk at night, not just a snuffle around the yard.
Hank does too, he's realized.
So: as the summer progresses,
Hank takes him for walks later and later until he's clipping on his leash no earlier than 9:30, when the sun's at least mostly down. It's pitch black by the time he's far from home, but Hank finds that he likes being out that late. Sometimes the fireflies are still out then, too.

He's seriously getting worried.
If before, he could contact his cousin and ask of his whereabouts, right now he doesn't have anyone to turn to.

Just then the door opens, revealing a drenched Kyungsoo. The younger just stands there, at the doorway with a bashful smile.
