This is Journogenic and Iatrogenic Harm @washingtonpost & @drbufka Was there any point to this story or basis for it?

Ostensibly, stress is bad in crisis. You spiked it by “managing stress” and fluff instead of information.
This is hard to say, but I don’t think you are going to re-evaluate your mission. You are going to mumble “20/20 hindsight” and return to dreck like this.

I have the feeling you will not go back to understand that you had a journalistic obligation NOT to run such pieces. At all.
Bluntly: why are you our experts?

This is a difficult thought: Maybe you aren’t. Maybe you were supposed to be doing journalism. And maybe that’s not what you do.

Can we consider that without anger or malice? Maybe you @washingtonpost & @drbufka are just in the wrong business.

1/ Let me say more clearly what I’ve been intimating. I am suspecting we may risk a colossal public health disaster because we have a terrible paternalistic expert public health culture of ‘managing’ and ‘nudging’ populations. And also lying to control public panic & shirk duty.
2/ In essence we developed a culture of magical thinking ‘experts’ who should have been keeping a deeper system for “bottleneck events”, but who for ages have been focused on luck-based “efficiency” because for the longest time our luck was amazing. Hence fragility is everywhere.
3/ These folks are our expert class in all areas: finance, policing, firefighting, etc. and they don’t plan for suddenly correlated needs. They don’t really plan for disasters. They say they do, but they lie to themselves. And then us. Thus we don’t have depth to handle crisis.

I can’t stop myself from wondering how much of what’s known is being shared; public health has an odd relationship to transparency.

Perhaps 100%, but I just can’t get it to add up completely. We‘re being forced to take enormous risks to avoid what we‘re told are enormous risks.
Here’s what I’m nervously waiting for:

A) Any push for broad phone surveillance powers to track the outbreak.

B) New powers asserted by central banks.

C) Use of the National Guard to enforce new restrictions.

D) Patriotic calls never to question A-C or our outbreak narrative.
When 9/11 brought the US the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act, only @russfeingold stood up in the senate for those of us who refused to stop questioning the use of a crisis to consolidate power.

Well, I *am* sheltering in place. But dammit if I’m going to stop questioning this mysterious bug.
