Thanks to incredibly fast & open data sharing by @UZH_Science @UZH_Virology @mihuber @ATrkola & GISAID, we've updated nextstrain.org/ncov with the first #COVID19 #SARSCoV2 sequence from Switzerland sampled on 26 Feb.

It sits near a Brazilian sample w travel history to Italy.
@UZH_Science @UZH_Virology @mihuber @ATrkola Minutes later, thank to the same great data sharing, we have a second Swiss sequence. This one links away from the first - in a group of sequences all with travel history to Italy, plus an Italian sequence from Lombardy.

Thanks to @seattleflustudy and @UWVirology, we have new genomic data on the spread of #COVID19 in Washington State with 2 new #SARSCoV2 genomes sequenced today, bringing the total number of WA genomes to five. 1/8
Four of these five genomes are all part of a single cluster that appears to descend from the initial WA1 case identified in mid-Jan, including the case in Snohomish as well as two cases from King County. 2/8 nextstrain.org/ncov?branchLab…
This directly suggests that the transmission chain initiated in mid-Jan by case WA1 in Snohomish is responsible for at least a portion of the cases appearing in Seattle. 3/8

Thanks to rapid global data sharing of #SARSCoV2 genomic data via gisaid.org, we can reconstruct large and small scale patterns of #COVID19 spread. This is a thread discussing this intersection of large and small. 1/7
At this point, a decent fraction (10/43) of sequenced viruses sampled after Feb 1 belong to a particular genetic lineage. This lineage has mutations unique to it that differentiate it from other #SARSCoV2 lineages. nextstrain.org/ncov?c=gt-nuc_… 2/7
This lineage contains viruses sampled from Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Italy, Brazil and Mexico. The Italian sample is from Lombardy, further suggesting this lineage is responsible for a sizable portion of the Italian epidemic. 3/7

I gathered some alarming information on the rise of #COVID in Iran in this thread. I can see that it has been read by many hence increases my responsibility on what I share now.

China tech's response to #nCoV continues to be fascinating. (thread)

After years of developing online-to-offline services, it's amazing how much software is available to help manage an epidemic.

Here's Tencent Health's mini-program from #WeChat:
The Health app had a little red dot this morning, letting me know there were updates

I didn't download the Health app.

It's one of several default mini-programs in WeChat Wallet. Basically everyone in China has WeChat, so everyone has the Health app.
Universal adoption of WeChat means everyone is familiar using the software, so there's little education barrier in an emergency like this.

The amount of data-sharing is likely reassuring for people not used to this much transparency from their government.
