/ What's noteworthy about the flaccid response of governments to #covid19 #coronavirus is how widespread it is. In America state and local governments controlled by members of both parties are doing little about it. Look at Seattle and Kirkland with limited school closings.
/ See how very incremental and limited are the Seattle school closings are for example. cnbc.com/2020/03/03/her…
/ Across the world few governments are acting decisively against the virus. They do not want to cause disruption to production, jobs, social activities, travel. Within Europe the northern states are doing the least to slow the virus's spread.
/ In a couple of months we may find ourselves in a situation where the medical institutions of Western countries are overwhelmed, their economies contracting while China has managed to impose controls that allow their economy to expand and recover much lost ground.
/ While the political failures are clearly bipartisan, as can be seen at the lower levels, expect the party out of power at the national level to (successfully) blame the party in power. Those out-of-power parties are lucky since they'd probably do no better.
/ Also, since the pandemic will slow economic growth or cause a recession the party in power at the national level in each country will be blamed for both the health disaster and the economic disaster. Really this is a great time for a political party to be out of power.
