We have a responsibility to teach our students about the #coronavirus and #xenophobia as a means of protecting our public health and humanity. @AndyBobZimm and I whipped up some readily usable slides: tinyurl.com/science-rumors 1/
I had a really challenging conversation with my students on Monday after a few students argued that the origin of the virus was "those people who eat bats" with a tone of disgust. 2/
The conversation led me to tears (I complete broke down in front of students... which has happened 3 times in my 10 year career), but I'm grateful to have facilitated it. I found #coronavirus to be a powerful connection to our science curricula (we're in a cell biology unit), 3/
and an opportunity to teach to media literacy (evaluation of sources- an #ngss SEP), and #xenophobia more broadly. Teachers, I urge you all to take the time to teach students about the science, media literacy, and the internalized racism. 4/
Our students have a very limited black-white, and interpersonal, understanding of racism, and I hope the #coronavirus presents an opportunity for us to connect our content to our public health and humanity. 5/5
Thank you to @MalakaGharib and @NPR for the student friendly comic on the new #coronavirus.
