F**k business continues apace!

In today's bout of Brexit madness, the Government said it will yank us out of EASA, the EU's aviation safety regime. UK aerospace will have to go it alone, relying on the CAA and hopefully bilateral treaties with everyone.

Oh, and the EASA is currently pursuing enforcement action against the UK (according to article) because we were not following all its rules properly.

So it's reassuring to know that Grant Shapps sees it as a positive that we can further get away from aviation safety standards.

Do you understand what we threw away on 31 January 2020? Do you? Really?

This is what EU membership used to give us, and why the best route out of Brexit would be to join again, no matter how long that takes...

1. Full unfettered access to the largest trading bloc in the world.
2. Free trade deals with dozens of countries around the world, including Japan, Canada and South Korea.

3. Frictionless borders allowing for just-in-time manufacturing, supporting millions of jobs in the auto industry, in aerospace etc.
4. Wide-open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, with no customs or other checks between NI and the rest of the UK.

5. Active support for the Good Friday Agreement and Irish peace process (NI benefitted from PEACE funding of over 1.5 billion euro between 1995 and 2020)

With the benefit of hindsight, I'm beginning to think the transition period could have been a bad idea.

Given all that's going on in the world, had we not had one, we might have been *begging* to rejoin the EU by now!

(Not *sure* either way, but I did wonder...)
We couldn't have known about the effects of the coronavirus then. But Boris Johnson wouldn't have been able to dodge the effects of Brexit.
To be absolutely clear: the coronavirus changed my mind.

Had it not been for that black swan factor, our current course of action would be by far the more prudent.

But now, the Tory wreckers are pulling out of everything with "European" in the name, seemingly with impunity.

The UK will cut VAT on female hygiene products to 0% after the transition period ends. Important to emphasize the EU is changing its VAT rules, so we wouldn't have had to leave in order to do so anyway (though it might have taken a bit longer). #TamponTax

So it is a significant development, but it shouldn't be held up as "proof" that the UK was right to leave the EU.

EU rules aren't carved in stone for all time. They adapt too. And generally (but not always) for the better, in response to concerns raised by member states.
Here's more background to all this. In fact, the UK helped drive the initiative that led the EU to reconsider its VAT rules. Our influence worked!

But then Brexit happened, and our side stopped pushing. The EU slowed off a bit (but has *not* given up).

So finally the major business groups are just starting to be consulted on #brexit future EU/UK trade deals.

But what do they want? Will govt listen to them? Or do they just over-estimate how much No 10 really cares? I've tried to find out.

Until now, all the main business groups uniformly report that on the EU-UK deal, there has been NO real consultation since the election.

Letters, emails, WhatsApps go mostly unanswered. It's a "black box" as one trade chief tells me. And only 4-5 weeks before talks begin. eek/2
To be clear, as @namali_mackay a former Australian trade negotiator tells me, this is NOT normal. Ordinarily business would be consulted every step of the way. /3
