For the right, it’s trumpeting record employment and the fact that inequality hasn’t risen recently. This doesn’t recognise that we’ve never had it so bad when it comes to living standards growth and that now it’s the poorest households faring worst.

Starting with the 1980s.
In the 2000s both the rich and the poor fared better, but the middle was squeezed.

Then came the financial crisis.
It was only last month that earning rose to pre crash levels. Had there been no crash and the growth trend was maintained we would, on average be earning £141 pw more.
Trying to cope with the massive hit to income people found jobs - hence the record employment figures- and by working longer hours making families freezes squeezed of cash and time.

And those at the bottom have fared worst.

Much worse. Because of Government policy choices.
