@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin Hi! Thank you for writing this comment - glad to see gender issues being considered from the outset! Like @SallyRMelb, I think there are a few distinct pathways via which outbreaks could lead to increases in #IPV & #GBV. Some thoughts: 1/n
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin First, on a macro-level, IPV may⬆️during times of high stress. Particularly when linked to economic stability & fears of job loss or not being paid/earning loss. There is a robust lit linking safety nets to both IPV & other intra-familiar violence: academic.oup.com/wbro/article/3…
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin 2nd & relatedly, there is a body of literature linking ⬆️ in unemployment of men to ⬆️ in IPV – part of this could be via similar mechanisms – &/or because inability to provide for family challenges male identity as breadwinners creating conflict: academic.oup.com/wber/advance-a…
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin In addition, the “exposure hypothesis” – e.g. when men are at home (or quarantined), IPV could be more frequent. Quarantines & deceased parents no longer able to protect girls potential drivers of⬆️ in pregnancies/rapes during Ebola crisis in Liberia 5/n: foreignpolicy.com/2016/02/02/the…
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin 3rd, post-disaster lit has found ⬆️in IPV for a variety of events, incl flooding, drought, cyclones etc. there was a nice report launched last month [see Ch. 5] – most evidence cited here is correlational – however there are some papers w/casual estimates: portals.iucn.org/library/sites/…
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin This could be due to a variety of factors, including women & girls having to travel further to get water/food/fuel or pathways above. An example I like is this one from post-earthquake Haiti pointing to both econ & social mechanisms: sociologicalscience.com/articles-v3-9-…
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin 4th, relatedly, GBV could happen at the point of humanitarian & health response. This has also been found in rapid response studies for Ebola & reports of women trading sex for vaccines or treatment [reported via FGD in #DRC]: nypost.com/2019/02/13/wom…
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin 5th, ongoing or new cases could be exacerbated because health & legal systems are not able to respond to GBV events, including first responders to cases of attempted female homicide – paired with increased perceived impunity & breakdown of rule of law in extreme cases 9/n
@RosemaryJMorgan @majardine @SallyRMelb @alexandraphelan @clarewenham @juliaheather @DaviesSaraE @DrSophieHarman @KarenGrepin Obviously this will vary by context/extent of the outbreak & there are likely other pathways I've missed, but just some ideas on how the two are linked! /end
