RESOURCES FOR WRITERS: a list of organisations, opportunities & support, which you really ought to have on your writerly radar, and which I wish had been on my own radar earlier in my career. Hope you find them useful. #thread #amwriting #writer
If you're a writer, join @Soc_of_Authors. They're great advocates for writers' rights, & offer PDF guides on working as a writer, specific advice on contracts etc for members & discounts on books! They also offer grants for work in progress & run annual awards.
@Soc_of_Authors Anyone in the arts should be aware of @ace_national (or @CreativeScots / @Arts_Wales_ / @ArtsCouncilNI, depending where you're based). They support writers through fundings opportunities - for individuals & organisations.
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI As well as funding, @ace_national also runs free newsletters: Arts Jobs & Arts News. These are go-to mailing lists for any jobs and opportunities within the arts sector, including for writers. artsjobs.org.uk
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI And speaking of newsletters, are you signed up to @ArtsPro? This one also contains job opportunities (though mainly larger-scale salaried posts), along with the lowdown of what's going on in the arts industry. It's a good way of keeping connected from your writing garret.
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI @ArtsPro Check out your regional writing organisation. For me, this is @NewWritingNorth - who offer support & opportunities to writers across the north of England, including running the #NorthernWritersAwards
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI @ArtsPro @NewWritingNorth Depending on where you live, yours could be: @cultureword, @writingwestmids, @WritingEM, @LitWorks, @newwritingsouth, @STWevents or @WritersCentre. It's worth checking out other regions' writing organisations, too, as they may have opportunities that are open nationally.
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI @ArtsPro @NewWritingNorth @cultureword @writingwestmids @WritingEM @LitWorks @newwritingsouth @STWevents @WritersCentre The @Writers_Artists Yearbook is released annually, & is particularly useful if you're querying a manuscript with agents / editors. I'd recommend using it in conjunction with the internet, and the publishers' / agencies' own websites. Also often available through local libraries.
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI @ArtsPro @NewWritingNorth @cultureword @writingwestmids @WritingEM @LitWorks @newwritingsouth @STWevents @WritersCentre @Writers_Artists If you're a writer & at all involved in education, @NaweWriters is essential. And even if you're not involved in education, they often share opportunities on their website. nawe.co.uk
@Soc_of_Authors @ace_national @CreativeScots @Arts_Wales_ @ArtsCouncilNI @ArtsPro @NewWritingNorth @cultureword @writingwestmids @WritingEM @LitWorks @newwritingsouth @STWevents @WritersCentre @Writers_Artists @NaweWriters If you're looking to sharpen your creative craft, or to gain inspiration, then check out @arvonfoundation courses, which are tutored by professional writers in all kinds of disciplines. They offer bursaries, often for young people &/or people on low incomes. #writing

They also have a newsletter you can sign up to.

Library noticeboards & regional writing organisations are good places to find these. And if there isn't one already, start one!

They run opportunities for young writers, and publish poems and articles that are worth reading whatever your age.

As well as being an excellent voice for authors' rights, her #TenTweets threads are always good advice for writers.

They also share advice on writing, which is applicable to writers of any gender.

I repeat: DON'T NEGLECT YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY. Whether for author events, or workshops, or just, you know, the old-fashioned resource of BOOKS, don't forget what you have access to with a simple library card.

Useful for research, or just for general inspiration. (Their image archive is particularly good.)
