Here’s an area where both UK and Canada ought to think of investing, and maybe fast
The above graph is really serious. The Hong Kong and Italy reports show that the main thing varying the Coronavirus death rate is availability of ICU beds and ventilators. A very large % of those hospitalized require these for average of ~4 weeks each.

The seriousness of the ventilator-supply problem is driven home by this @zeynep thread. Her point: a Corona response with limited ICU beds increases the mortality rate OF EVERYTHING ELSE because you must triage very sick people out of intensive-care beds

And here’s Dr @MaryFernando_ reinforcing that point: Canada’s acute-care beds per population is 52 per cent of the OECD average. And worse because a) HUGE geographic distribution and b) presumably hard to source ventilators from Canada

Number one item the Iranian foreign minister is begging the world for: Ventilators.

Of course we can blame his incompetent regime for failing to invest in health infrastructure. But that failure is causing horrendous death and misery to many people

Here's northern Italian anesthetist Christian Salaroli describing what triage means when you have limited ventilators:
