I keep thinking about this and about all the libertarian reply guys on tweets about the Senate sick leave bill with "actually, companies do that anyway" and I keep thinking about Jay and Silent Bob thinking a cross-country bus would be free because they used to take school buses.
The assuming that companies in the US just give everybody paid sick leave and assuming that everybody just... has a doctor... gets back to the core of one of the obstacles to progress I've talked about before:

Mostly, we assume things are better than they are.
And part of this is that we have let so many things remain unthinkably bad. Like, ridiculously so. The biggest employers in the country don't give paid time off? The people who handle our food have to come in to work sick or they get fired? How could any of that be REAL?
