The racist scapegoating of the Chinese is building anger and is going to lead to violence. Using prejudices and fear to hide failures is the hallmark of an authoritarian regime, and it almost always ends in blood and ruin.
Authoritarians create crises through their incompetence and lust for power. Those crises are tinged with the cultural rage that have them power to begin with. That rage is stoked when their mistakes grow too large to hide. Authoritarians like Trump are happy to endanger lives.
I cannot stress this enough. This isn’t just racism. It’s authoritarian maneuvering. Every day now is going to bring new attacks, new vilification. This is leading somewhere. Stop being surprised by Trump. Stop being surprised by Republicans. See where this is going.
Be prepared. This is a cycle. Failure. Denial. Scapegoating. Anger. Power. It plays out like the ticking of a clock. It’s repulsively obvious and unless we confront this and call it what it is we are going to watch it unfold.
