We don't get a second chance to get this right.

And the cost of inaction will be measured in Victorian lives.

From midday today, Stage One of our response to coronavirus means that non-essential activities will be shut down.

That includes pubs, clubs, gyms and cinemas – and restricting restaurants and cafes to take-away and delivery only.

I know we're asking a lot of people. But we wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

We're also bringing forward school holidays, with today being the last day of term for government schools.

That'll give teachers the time they need to prepare for potential online learning in the weeks and months ahead.

My heartfelt thanks goes out to all our teachers and school staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past few weeks.

I know it hasn't been easy. But your role in maintaining some sense of normality in our kids' lives has made all the difference.

I really can't stress enough how important it is that we all do the right thing here.

All this action is meaningless if people choose to act selfishly and continue as normal.

Call it mateship. Call it your civic duty. I really don't mind.

But please – follow the rules.

Pubs and bars are closed for a reason.

It doesn't mean you can have all your mates round and get on the beers.

If you can stay home – you should stay home.

It only takes a single person at a party to make hundreds of people sick – if not thousands.

This is bigger than any one of us. But it will only work if all of us play our part.

Do it for the people you love and the people you've never met.

We can do this. We must.
