⚠️New report describes characteristics of 3,200 patients in #Italy who died from #COVID19.

Symptoms at time of hospital admission:

▶️Fever 76%
▶️Dyspnoea (shortness of breath) 73%
▶️Cough 40%
▶️NO symptoms 5.7%

Consistent with other reports, older patients (>70 yo) comprise the vast majority of deaths. Rationing of healthcare in #Italy may have skewed these numbers even higher.

Note the STRIKING disparity between the number of men🔵 >> women🔴 who died from #COVID19.

This disparity in #COVID19 mortality between men >> women in #Italy was also seen in #China.

Analysis of 44,672 #coronavirus patients in #China: of those who died, 63.8% were men vs. 36.2% women with case-fatality rates of 2.8 vs 1.7%, respectively.

In #Italy, cardiovascular disorders were common co-morbidities (pre-existing conditions) in #COVID19 patients who died. However, many of the patients who died were OLDER, and these conditions are much more common in older people.

👉🏼Association does NOT equal causation.
Just because you see that lots of #COVID19 patients who died had “X,” doesn’t mean that “X” increased their risk of death, especially when “X” is common in this patient group.

Hypertension is a good example.👇🏼

Statisticians needed to analyze these data from #Italy ans #China!
This striking disparity in #COVID19 deaths of men >> women deserves more analysis. It’s possible that men have increased co-morbidities putting them at higher risk, rather than gender per se.

What about the 5.7% with NO symptoms at time of admission who later died from #COVID19?

It’s possible that detailed medical records weren’t obtainable (ongoing crisis) or the patient had LOTS of risk factors = high risk and was hospitalized a priori.

NY health officials will collect “convalescent” plasma (liquid part of blood) from recovered #COVID19 patients & inject the #antibody-rich plasma into sick #coronavirus patients.

This approach was used during the 1918 Spanish Flu #pandemic.

Although convalescent plasma is “old school,” it has a good chance of success.

Convalescent plasma decreased the severity of symptoms & shortened hospital stays for #SARS, and preliminary reports from #China suggests it also works for #coronavirus.😃
#COVID19 convalescent plasma first will be given to critically ill #coronavirus patients. Once proven safe & effective (good chance!), it will likely work best if given BEFORE patients get critically ill. It might also be effective in protecting front-line health care workers.🤗

😱#COVID19 death toll in the US is rising at a faster rate than nearly any country, with #coronavirus deaths DOUBLING *nearly every 2 days*.

Deaths are a “lagging” indicator, as it takes time for patients to 1) become symptomatic (median=5 days) and 2) to succumb (2-3 weeks). 2/
This #coronavirus has an R0=3 (each infected person infects 3 other people on average).

After 10 rounds of this, that 1st infection leads to 59,000 new #COVID19 cases.

And the virus has been circulating UNDETECTED in our communities for MONTHS.🤬

This thread is my story battling symptoms this last week. They started differently than what has been reported, which caused some confusion and later fear, and might have led to other's exposure. I believe there are a things we (collectively) can do to better combat #COVID
My wife (Melody) and I were exposed to someone that was sick and in our home a few days before we started seeing symptoms. Melody developed a mild fever, headache and was nauseous a little over a week ago. She also had digestive issues.
The next day, I started having the same issues and developed a rash on my biceps that lasted for a few hours. We didn’t think much of it, because these aren’t symptoms commonly described as being related to COVID-19 and we likely exposed other people.

The most distinctive comorbidities of 32 non-survivors from a group of 52 ICU patients w/ #COVIDー19 were cerebrovascular diseases (22%) & diabetes (22%).

Another study 173 had severe disease w/comorbidities of htn (23·7%), diabetes mellitus (16·2%), coronary heart diseases (5·8%), & cerebrovascular disease (2·3%). Third study of 140 patients who were admitted to hospital with COVID-19, 30% had hypertension & 12% had diabetes.

I am an RN who also assists with a Community Call-In Line which screens symptoms and educates on the Corona Virus. This is information I have put together & am sharing. I recommended calling your MD for confirmation if symptoms apply to you.
Concerned about the Corona Virus? Ask yourself these questions:

1. Have I traveled to any of the known affected geographic areas in the past 14 days?

2. Have I had close contact with a person known to have the Corona Virus illness?

3. Do I have a fever greater than 100?
4. Do I have a cough?

5. Do I have shortness of breath?

If your answer to all of these are no your are not considered at risk. If any of these answers are yes, (with or without travel history) continue below...
