Let’s assume we did as is being suggested here and potentially suggested by our president. Everyone back to work. Allow the virus to do its worst 1/
Protect our elderly and immunocompromised by indefinite isolation - essentially jail them in their homes 2/
And ignore for a moment the need to to care for all of them somehow without breaking their isolation. Ignore those at risk who can’t isolate - the homeless for example. 3/
The number of ill patients presenting to the hospitals in need of care would quickly overwhelm our hospital systems. Many of our skilled providers would die - data from Italy shows they are more likely to become ill and more likely to die. 4/
The America we would have at the end of all that would look nothing like it does today and the job of rebuilding would be made much more difficult. 5/
Many would die not of the virus but of other causes and our infrastructure including our ability to create food and goods as well as distribute them would be severely impacted. 6/
There is no option to simply end our efforts to fight this virus with social isolating and “take our chances” We lose our humanity doing so and we gain very little to nothing. 7/
There are ways to fight this and get back to work but we must be creative and industrious. Wide spread testing is key. Those “immune” can get back to work once we see a downturn in infections. 8/
Others have already written about this in detail. I’ll link to best articles below. Simply put - hellish suggestion of letting our beloved elderly parents and others at risk die so we can “preserve” our inequitable economy is deeply offensive but also completely impossible.
