/ For super hard-core pro-Trumpers, the administration’s policies confirm their view that Donald Trump is nearly messianic. For super hard-core anti-Trumpers, what they hear and see confirms their belief that Trump is the devil incarnate. He is neither messiah nor devil.
/ Everything Donald Trump has done is not "perfect"—and his most ardent supporters need to acknowledge that fact. He has not imposed "fascism" or "placed our liberal democratic order in jeopardy"--his most excitable critics really should abandon that kind of rhetoric.
/ Whatever Donald Trump says or does gets refracted through thick pro-Trump or anti-Trump lenses, making it very difficult for people to assess the steps and stances he or his administration take objectively on the merits. It really is important for us to try to do that, though.
/ With respect to any policy or policy proposal, it would be good to ask oneself: How would I be assessing this matter if it were an Obama policy (or a Bush or Clinton policy)? One needs to lay one's pro- or anti-Trump passions aside and really be honest with oneself about that.
/ Donald Trump is a polarizing figure--on that perhaps we can all agree. It makes it hard for his supporters to admit it when he makes mistakes (or even says things that are ridiculous), and hard for his opponents to admit it when he does good things.
/ That's especially true with an election pending. People on neither side are willing to risk "helping" those on the other side ("the enemy!") by speaking--or even thinking--truths that are inconvenient to, take your pick: the cause of re-electing Donald Trump or defeating him.
