Just last week, on 19-March #Covid-19 was *downgraded* in the UK to no longer be a High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID). Politically-influenced decision? HCID status confers additional standards, e.g. protective equipment. Is this to get govt and authorities off a hook?

This is what it means. Since 19-March no "Specific infection prevention and control (IPC) measures are required for suspected and confirmed HCID cases, *in all healthcare settings (specialist and non-specialist).*"

Status of COVID-19

I have read the Public Health Guidance and was struck by a couple of things.

1/7
I see that SARS and MERS remain on the list of HCIDs. Neither of those 'penetrated' the UK to the same extent as COVID-19 but, both had lower transmission rates and higher fatality rates than (currently estimated for) COVID-19.

Apart from the belief that COVID-19 may not meet the "typically has a high case fatality rate" criterion for definition as a HCID it does seem to meet all of the others.

Huh? As of March 19th UK no longer considers #COVIDー19 to be an HICD (high consequence infectious disease) to qualify as an HIDC the virus must:
🦠not have a treatment
🦠be spread by direct contact with patients, droplets etc
They also say it has low mortality rate.
So confused. Either they’re missing something or we are.

The weirdest part is SARS does qualify as a HCID, coronavirus is SARS-coV-2.
