CHINA KEEPS FINDING #COVID19 CASES, BUT FAILS TO OFFICIALLY REPORT THEM. A little known but documented fact is that China doesn’t count lab🧪 positive cases if no symptoms. (Verified by @lwcalex). So no surprise- Wuhan is still finding lots of cases...🧵

2) Notably, “according to a member of ID prevention&control team in Wuhan, every day continues to have “several or more than a dozen asymptomatic infected individuals,” which are people who tested positive #Covid19, but do not feel ill and are excluded from published numbers.”
3) What does this mean? The Wuhan epidemic is not over year, despite China’s rosy official numbers. Anywhere in the world, a lab 🧪 positive case is counted as an official case. But China’s own guidelines excludes them. China cannot and should not exclude positive #COVID19 cases.

How bad will this get – it depends. If we act now ( #socialdistancing), limited interaction we can slow the spread. With vaccines being trialed, theres hope we can quell this, but realistically only toward end of the year (trials, testing, distribution, administration) /3

This is the kind of attitude that gets people killed.

Here is how I explained it to my nine year old:

Ebola and other plagues are usually easy to catch and stop. They are deadly, but that very deadliness makes them stand out. We spot them. We stop them.

#COVID is different.
#Covid ‘s mildness is the most dangerous aspect of it.

Many people who catch it don’t even experience symptoms.

Children, who cough on everything and never wash their hands CARRY IT WITHOUT SYMPTOMS.

When symptoms do show, they come two weeks later. Two WEEKS.
That means that for every sick person we see and test and hospitalize, there are probably a hundred people walking around feeling just fine, infecting other people who feel just fine, who infect OTHER people who feel JUST FINE.

Then two weeks later... KABOOM

Just spoke w/ a surg resident from a major program where elective cases R cancelled but resident schedules haven’t been changed appropriately to address #COVID exposure concerns. This resident is expected to TRIPLE SCRUB a case in 2 days. How are people letting this happen? 1/8
As a intern w/ zero authoritative power, I’m incredibly thankful for our chief residents & fellows here @UMichSurgery who have taken it upon themselves to work with faculty & our dept leadership to address this crisis and it’s impact on our health system & day 2 day workforce 2/8
Services are limited 2 only essential “skeleton” team members, usually a chief/fellow + junior resident who round. Residents are not staffing clinics. Urgent/emergent cases are covered by level appropriate residents w/ care to minimize # of ppl in hospital at any given time 3/8

Only six weeks ago, in the last days of January, Wuhan, China was seeing thousands of new cases a day. The hospitals were overwhelmed, and 14% of nurses became infected. It got pretty Dantean. 2/11
On January 23, China imposed draconian public health measures to try and halt the spread. At that point, there had been 517 #COVIDー19 cases in Wuhan, and 17 deaths—on both counts, fewer than America has right now. 3/11
