Thread for allies on #BlackintheIvory

Be this kind of a person. We know the existing level of power differential between faculty & students or trainees.

Now add #BlackintheIvory

Step up. Be an ally. Report on behalf even if not asked. If you see power abused, speak up.
As a doctor, need to be able to do one’s job. Also, a doctor is in a position to protect others, *if* role is recognized. #BlackintheIvory

Those prestige/hierarchy oriented, treat some people poorly

(I get mistaken for cleaning person or receptionist)

Reporting on black student, trainees, & faculty #SoMe and #SciComm posts is higher - due to #implicitbias or overt racism

Black culture often offends

Institutions need to screen OUT frivolous reporting on black ppl - NOT assume fault

#BlackintheIvory

Do not ask the black student or faculty to do the naming, even the reporting. Do it yourself

And expect there to be consequences you have to bear as real (not performative) allyship involves some sacrifice. Can fracture relationships

#BlackintheIvory

This goes all the more if a licensed clinician. If a black academic clinician, it can be an experience of constant police state.

#BlackintheIvory

No matter how accomplished or successful, even a 2nd generation @harvardmed graduate, the “police state” of surveillance/censorship can drive out as per @uche_blackstock

Being a trailblazer like this is *not* easy as a woman + black, as a Black woman.

How many academics talk of #impostersyndrome even without the experience of racial bias at play?

That is the problem: own anxiety blocks allyship

#BlackintheIvory

Assumed to only have physical prowess is a racial trope - not a compliment when the flip side is fear of a black man resulting in physical violence against black men.

#BlackExcellence includes brilliant brains and intellect.

#BlackintheIvory

#BlackExcellence wins prizes and awards, which means doing the work.

Many discount the merit by assuming “diversity” is the reason.

This is far too common. It is performative - but only for limited audiences.

It extracts effort, time, creativity from faculty & students when leadership has failed to create buy in or take an ethical stance.

#BlackintheIvory

Being seen and treated like an intruder when in one’s appropriate place. Then feeling at risk, needing to alter oneself rather than feel protected.

#BlackintheIvory

Objectified & used as example by faculty in official class. This is not only traumatizing, but also laziness on the part of faculty

No, take the time to create case studies for your curriculum and adhere to standards

#BlackintheIvory
#AcademicTwitter

Not assessed correctly using measurable and verifiable metrics like publications. If facts were verified and assessed fairmindedly, #BlackExcellence would be recognized.

#education

The existing imbalance in #research, the gaps in research in minority, specifically black, populations not recognized

If disparities at baseline

Then focus black populations, by black researchers, is appropriate and needed
