Learning about message sticks is my favorite. When thinking about message sticks from a #literacies perspective, they seem very modern.

It is intriguing to learn that humans weren't made to #read and that it is possible due to brain plasticity. It is also fascinating that #reading #Chinese script and alphabetic #writing activates different brains areas

I am surprised #English has changed so much over time. #language mixing with #French and #printing for a unified linguistic market have affected English #spelling

Have you ever seen a talking knot of a string with multiple colors which has a record of all the bureaucratic information?

Well, let's see it...

#language mixing in Sumerian administrative texts is amazing and shows that linguistic #diversity not only exists in contemporary society but goes a long way back ...

The human brain has a magnificent power to develop. #Writing went through various phases and what surprise us most, that writing was not just letters or hieroglyphs, it can even be strings tied to be "talking knots"/Inca quipu!

How message sticks were used for diplomatic exchanges before colonization is absolutely intriguing. A small engraved wooden stick could pack so much meaning that the messenger should convey an explanatory statement to the recipient.
Thanks, @perezkelly!

The most impressive knowledge is how Indigenous Australians’ message sticks, which were so disregarded, have become evidence to prove the importance of #literacy events and their context in determining the meaning of all #writing
amsd.clld.org
#literacy event is really interesting due to its close and high relation to the contemporary society. With a piece of written information, there are different interpretations depending on the contexts. And #Tarot reading is no exception as one card’s #message could be several
Fascinating: there was no single group behind the invention of #writing. Despite geographical distance, civilisations in Mesopotamia, Mesoamerica and China all found a similar solution to a similar problem: making #language more permanent across time and space through writing
People orally transmit what they know in preliterate society rather than #writing it down. The first city used writing to record surplus, arable land, tax and so on which shows that writing was invented for the domains of bureaucracy, trade, commerce and religion
Mysterious Australian Aboriginal message sticks will blow your mind! Writing or funky art? Europe’s traditional ethnocentric approach cloud perceptions of what is writing and civilisation. Investigation reveals the enigma of message sticks and complexity of Aboriginal culture
Did you know that in 2019 a message stick was delivered 8500 kilometres on foot to the PM? Message sticks are a form of communication used by First Australians but unfortunately due to the material, not many have survived until today. What a pity Scott Morrison rejected it!
Shulgi, Ancient King of “… the Four Corners of the Universe” boasted of his #multilingual skills. So how did we come to the point where the personal impact of #language loss must be so powerfully expressed?

Favorite facts about #languages and #cultures in #contact
In #Arabic we say: “Footprints indicate trajectory”, but I never thought that a wheel would reveal a culture. This is how #cultures can be traced through #languages. The reading made me feel like I am solving a puzzle more than exploring languages.
Think twice before starting to learn #English, cuz you’ll end up learning even more -- #German and #French, and more …
After all, it was the Anglo-Saxons and Normans who influenced the vocabulary!!
English is a mixed #language!

Favorite facts about #literacy

#Literacy is dynamic, continually developing and unfolds in new and unexpected ways. Learning the inception of #writing and its trajectory to the forms we use now has me excited to observe how literacy continues to develop in the future

I particularly was surprised by the fact that early prints were made to be similar to handwriting, I thought that was quite genius idea! Also, I liked the fact that printed #books were given to the people whose main job was to decorate them! Image
