Learned so much in this evening's @AACI_Cancer@ webinar on physician use of social media! Dr. @fumikochino highlighted sev successful research collaborations that began via #SoMe & said that Twitter has helped a lot with the "hustle" all #MedTwitter junior faculty face.
Dr. @SyedAAhmad5, who began tweeting during the #pandemic, highlighted opportunities to expand reach of #MedEd via #SoMe. For example, he taught this to #MedStudentTwitter, then realized there was no reason the learning needed to be confined to his operating room. cc @AACI_Cancer
Drs. @Jasosamd, @fumikochino, & @SyedAAhmad5 provided examples of using #SoMe to inform #MedTwitter, #SurgTwitter, & the pt #advocacy community about one's own research, as well as to promote the work of colleagues, esp mentees.
#mentorship #HeForShe #SheForShe
cc @AACI_Cancer
I was honored to give a shout out to @acweyand & the entire @HCWvsHunger family for use of #SoMe to support a great cause & simultaneously boost #MedTwitter morale. To date, via #HCWvsHunger, we've raised >$788K to fight hunger during the #pandemic. #LetsGo 💪🍎
cc @AACI_Cancer
We talked about harnessing the power of #SoMe to build #MedTwitter community. Dr. @Jasosamd discussed the support & collaboration in online #SurgTwitter groups. Dr @fumikochino shared a poignant story about the impact of losing a pt #advocacy friend she knew only from Twitter.
We shared tips for #MedTwitter & #SurgTwitter colleagues of all ages starting out on #SoMe. Among the pearls:
💡Send your inaugural tweet at a conference (@fumikochino) for ⬆️engagement
💡Don't shy away from using the🎙️you've been handed, but tweet responsibly (@SyedAAhmad5 & me)
It's clear #SoMe can expand the reach of your work & your network, which should be reflected downstream in trad academic measures (eg. publications, talks, etc). But #AcademicTwitter is also prob overdue to account for social media directly in #MedTwitter promotions.
@Jasosamd
Last but not least, we talked about THE BIG Q: How much time should we spend on social media? Would #MedTwitter time be better spent elsewhere? We all recommended to know why you're on #SoMe, whether you're viewing content or creating your own, to avoid wasting time. cc @Jasosamd
Despite the challenges of #MedTwitter (in gen'l & recently...), this webinar reminded me why I ♥️ it here: great colleagues I might never have otherwise met, open exchange of ideas, opportunities for #MedEd, #mentorship, research collaboration, #advocacy, & more. Carry on, fam.😍
I'll close with this: if you're planning a panel, you NEED a surgeon moderator. Holy timekeeping, @Jasosamd! Zero rushing, exactly 60 mins. Planning a panel? Watch the @AACI_Cancer session (will post link in 🧵once recording avail). She's expert level. Mad respect, #SurgTwitter.

#HoCoMd #Election2022 - I am supporting @DanNewberger & @JackyMcCoyBOE in the non-partisan race for @HCPSS Board of Ed. I have spent a lot of time reading about all of the candidates. McCoy & Newberger, endorsed by @MomsDemand, are committed to ending #GunViolence in our schools.
.@JackyMcCoyBOE has been a teacher for decades & is endorsed by our local educators. She has dyslexia & achieved a graduate level-degree so understands what supports make it possible for students with learning differences to be academically successful.

.@DanNewberger is a parent of HCPSS students & a Navy veteran with a Master in Public Policy who has worked in military, corporate, and non-profit sectors. In those roles, he has had to achieve consensus among people w/ widely divergent opinions, a critical skill at this time. /3

So the kids at our local high school are now referring to “Homecoming fever,” a cough/fever that is hitting tons of the student body since the dance on Saturday.

I’m so tired of perpetual sickness. I know you are too.

#GetBoosted & 😷 & #WashYourHands

#Pandemic #HoCoMD
Update: hearing from LOTS more parents on another platform that their kids have fever & cough post #Hoco2022. Sev have tested + for #Influenza A. If your kids aged 6m & up haven’t had a #FluShot, get it done. We don’t need more home/school/work disruption. 😷 + #WashHands.
Update #2: Posted about this in a high school parent group text as well, & now everyone I know is texting me this morning that their kid also tested pos for influenza A. There are prescription meds to both treat & prevent (if exposed) flu, so see a dr. #HoCoMD #Homecoming

This trend of #COVID19 followed soon after by #rhinovirus or #enterovirus (& we have it in our 🏠 , test-confirmed) is 👎👎. The 🫁 are taking a beating. Beware, especially folks w/ #asthma & other lung diseases. Masks on. 👀 recent CDC alert: emergency.cdc.gov/han/2022/han00…. #MedTwitter
If you are age 12+, it’s been at least 2 mos since your last dose of #COVID19 #vaccine or any # of #booster dose, & you haven’t gotten your updated #Omicron bivalent #boostershot, get it! Likewise anyone 6m old & up who hasn’t had a #FluShot this fall, go get one. Same day is👌.
There is unfortunately no vaccine vs #rhinovirus or #enterovirus. For that, our best bet is to improve air quality (open windows if possible, Corsi-Rosenthal boxes, etc), #MaskUp, & try to get those around us to #WearAMask too. Really concerned for folks with #asthma etc like us.

Part 2 of ACP-Medicine Forward series on solutions to #FixPriorAuth happening now w/ amazing lineup! @gabrieldane, co-founder w/ @EricTopol of @MedicineForward, kicks off the mtg w/ comments about urgency of #MedTwitter #advocacy & activism to protect dr-patient relationship.
Dr. @ShikhaJainMD is orienting audience to the amt of time #MedTwitter spends doing prior auth & peer-to-peer calls, in many cases w/ insurance company "peers" w/ no training in the specialty. Some could not even pronounce the tumor type or drug name. #DenialOfCare #FixPriorAuth
Dr. @ShikhaJainMD says that she cares for a patient with #cancer whose insurance company only allow 4 CT scans LIFETIME for their #cancer, which prevents her from assessing how well the treatment is working. This is absurd & MUST be fixed. #DenialOfCare #FixPriorAuth #MedTwitter

FDA has extended emergency auth of Novavax #vaccine to age 12-17y. Given as 2 doses 3w apart, it was 78% effective in preventing confirmed symptomatic #COVID19 7d after dose 2. It is a protein-based vaccine like many familiar vaccines in use for decades, e.g. tetanus. #MedTwitter
Those under 18 are much less likely to be fully #vaccinated against #COVID19 than adults in the US, even though we now have vaccines authorized & recommended for kids as young as 6 mos. We'll see fewer kids missing school this fall/winter the more we #GetVaccinated now.
When I am trying to decide about something outside of #MedTwitter, I ask what professionals in that field do themselves. In case that approach is helpful to you, here's a poll.

Doctors: did you get your eligible kids #vaccinated against #COVID19?

I’m more cautious than @Bob_Wachter when it comes to #WearAMask indoors (basically always w/ ppl from outside my 🏡 except briefly when I have to eat). I share his🧵 because this approach is sound: choose deliberately knowing current trends & weighing risk vs benefits. I differ…
On one point: I don’t agree that “the tools now exist” means everyone has the tools. We know that #COVID19 treatments are being underutilized in low-income & minoritized groups. We know that the high-quality N95 😷 that Dr. Wachter concedes are tough to wear all day every day…
Are what is needed to optimally protect workers in high-risk settings (think public mass transit workers, etc). Each time any one of us chooses not to #WearAMask & risks getting infected, we make it more necessary for others to wear N95 level masks to stay safe from us.
