We have now moved into committee! SB23-111 is for #worker protections & makes sure that public employees can engage in the political process like everyone else
Public employees are nurses, teachers, public service workers & EMT drivers #copolitics
The right to strike for public employees is only possible after presenting to a board - there is not a avenue for public employees to #unionize or #organize if they think they need too
We are now hearing from a Nurse who tells us 'this impacts you all cause you seek health care'
We have testimony from @DenverHealthMed worker - who says "you do not need a heart beat in a seat, you need a capable health care worker when you are seeking health care"
"we need to level the playing field between our bosses & unions" #copolitics
YES on SB23-111 🔥
Awesome testifier who has a not-so-aligned-to-workers-values-mom who said "this isn't already law?"
yes, us too - we are surprised that #protections for #workers & public protections isn't guaranteed
A high school counselor from @ColoradoEA has COVID and is calling in "from woodland park to Jeff you will hear from workers & teachers across these districts... the long term repercussions are horrible - our educators are demoralized & disrespected"
a hospital #worker is testifying on behalf of being retaliated against while he was a nurse - he speaks to the pressure of caring for people & the stress of thinking he might get fired every day - his wife was fired, she has cancer, he pleads with committee members "we need help"
We are hearing from another #healthcare#worker & all the #moral injuries like #burnout she is speaking about a doctor that was retaliated against after he testified on behalf of the Public Option Bill here last yr
He was contacted by the medical board after
wow. just wow.
Vice President of the Education Association of Mountain Valley - he says 🔥"educator well being is not unconstitutional" 🔥
He is the 3rd social studies teacher in 3 yrs
"this bill will address these problems VOTE YES on 111" #copolitics
take a shot for all anti-worker or oppressive phrases - ready? @CWAUnion
With this rate we will be drunk by 4pm for sure
IT IS YES on SB111 committee!
"SB111 will endorse misconduct" - untrue & false SHOT 🔥
"we have concerns of public safety & having strikes with workers that would cause public safety concerns" - false, data proves otherwise - SHOT! 🔥
"this bill seeks things that are already law" - BIG SHOT 🤣 #copolitics
It TOTALLY makes sense that the Colorado Association of Charter Schools is testifying in opposition of #workers
"this bill raises more questions than answers"
"we question why this is so one sided"
"this will substantially change the K-12 environment"
💀 #copolitics
Opposition thanks the #workers who took time out of their day dealing with retaliation & maybe losing their jobs to speak up about their harassment
That means nothing (to us) cause they don't want those #workers to be able to speak up cause they don't support SB111
Like, ew.
The fact sheet that opposition has sent to the legislators - @SenadoraJulie asks "what is proper retaliation" since that is the language used on their fact sheet
"Improper employer conduct should be handled under existing law" is the very-far-reaching-not-answer to her question
So the question goes to another in opposition, which sucks too - "there is nothing that can't be handled through existing law right now"
Great Q from @SenadoraJulie:
how many cases have been successfully litigated in court since there are already laws protecting #workers (main oppositional point)?
Ppl that don't want public employees to have #worker#protection say "we do not know"
@SenadoraJulie reminds the committee that we just heard from multiple stories & #workers that have horrifying stories - truly, so, how can the answer be - that we already have existing law when clearly people across the state are being retaliated against?
answer: nothing new
We have a stellar testifier reminding committee members that the guardian #worker#protections that the opposition spoke about - takes nearly 3 years to complete an actual litigation - so no, public employees do not have protections
🔥 YES on SB111 🔥
Our testifier makes it clear - this bill supports #workers who deal with #retaliation
“It is too easy to intimidate workers & the public sector doesn’t keep tabs on this”
In fact, #postpartum depression not only is the number one killer of birthing parents - it is killing us in the long term too - 20% of deaths in the postpartum period are due to #Suicides
U.S. policies that hate families and women perpetuate this obvi.
#2: "Authorities have not said whether they're looking {postpartum psychosis} as a factor in her alleged crimes, but "It does seem like a pretty classic case of postpartum depression with potential psychosis,"
This mornings rant is about #paidfamilyleave in Colorado & how #voters overwhelmingly passed FAMLI
[& employers can now register for CO’s new program finally; employees max 12 weeks of paid leave a yr + 4 additional wks for #pregnancy or #childbirth complications]
Let’s get 1st thing straight - this 🧵 is no insight into the near 15 yrs #advocates fought for #paidfamilyleave at the CO state Capitol before #voters passed it on the #ballot
I, like many folks - came into the advocacy for #FAMLI yrs after lots of fight. Grateful to have it
This mornings rant is dedicated to all the folks doing #community designed policy. I see MANY ppl talk about this in #copolitics & very FEW tangibly do it successfully.
Join me in yesterdays presentation to @DePaulU students & some good local examples - a 🧵
Whether it’s small p or big P #policy how we design initiatives, how we write bills, how we engage testifiers, how we build coalitions & organize - can perpetuate inequities we’re trying to disrupt. #copilitics
white supremacy cultural characteristics love policy & advocacy
We’ve got incredible #leaders that stray away from white supremacy cultural characteristics in advocacy & lead with #integrity
There’s a beautiful thing that happens when we build policy with people most impacted, & leaders who understand social determinants of health, & students, & direct service providers. #copolitics#denverliving shout out to Amanda Orta - who runs programming for COVIVO #policy
Chicago has very similar niche #housing issues as #Denver - a group of parents from south side built policy development w/ #workingparents in Denver last yr - we convened it, it’s awesome to see parents & young ppl advocating for complex housing issues. In their communities.
This mornings rant is for ppl that keep losing ppl.
Or, ppl that keep losing ppl & there never seems to be time to process all the death, or for the people that constantly live in grief since they were young cause people are always dying.
Olivia passed away the other day. Some sent me a screen shot on a story about someone saying goodbye. Apparently it happened last week.
Like all of us I rush to her social media “no way” I think. Looking for an obituary cause we live far from home now. #Minneapolis
My mind floods - which isn’t about Olivia - it’s about losing many friends and chosen family to these common killers 1) fetanyl 2) suicide 3) homicide.
My bias tells me it’s surely 1 of the 3. B/c I’ve lost more ppl to the top 2 - around 15-20 to be exact. #suicide#fetanyl
Thankful to see Gianna Horton from the Denver Justice Project & @intrfthalliance and their great questions to the candidates for the Independent Monitor position.
Shara Smith coming through @intrfthalliance with some great questions:
“What do you believe is the role of the independent monitor of ensuring the safety of marginalized groups? “
Candidate Liz Castle says we should have police & law enforcement make better connections to communities, not all communities are the same and need different approaches.
Mary Opler is speaking about #ClubQ & how hate crimes have sky rocketed, that Denver can do more.
