We have now moved into committee! SB23-111 is for #worker protections & makes sure that public employees can engage in the political process like everyone else

Public employees are nurses, teachers, public service workers & EMT drivers #copolitics

YES ON SB23-111 👨‍⚕️
The right to strike for public employees is only possible after presenting to a board - there is not a avenue for public employees to #unionize or #organize if they think they need too

We are now hearing from a Nurse who tells us 'this impacts you all cause you seek health care'
We have testimony from @DenverHealthMed worker - who says "you do not need a heart beat in a seat, you need a capable health care worker when you are seeking health care"

"we need to level the playing field between our bosses & unions" #copolitics

YES on SB23-111 🔥

This is wrong and inaccurate. And, of course, I have a LOT to sat about this. Let's begin a LONG LONG thread --

#MinimumWage #Capitalism #WorkersRights
1 -- First of all, it is a gross misconception that minimum wage jobs are supposed to be practice for high school kids and college kids to earn a little bit of money. FDR straight up said when establishing the Minimum Wage that it was meant to be a "Living Wage"
1a -- "It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. ...and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.”

lnkd.in/e4fRa9WN By this they meant the toxic system whereby the ruling elite enjoyed a parasitic relationship with the state enabling them to obtain jobs and money through patronage, partisanship and purchase.

We call upon the Irish Government to #stopCETA!

CETA could devastate efforts to enact progressive legislation on housing, health, labour, env & climate.

🇮🇪 is not obliged to ratify CETA and there is no compelling rationale in favour of doing so! 🧵

businesspost.ie/legal/comment-…
The trade related chapters of CETA were ratified by the European Parliament in 2017.

The investment chapter of CETA [allowing companies to sue countries] will only come into effect if the agreement is ratified by all 27 EU member states - including Ireland.
The ratification of CETA (i.e. the investment chapters of the agreement) could enable corporations to try to sue governments under a special "Investor Court System" (ICS) - a mechanism that would bypass our own domestic and EU Courts.

Two facts come to mind when I reflect on #LaborDay2020. 1st, I can't help but think abt the Imperial Foods workplace tragedy that befell friends & neighbors in my @CityofHamlet hometown in 1991. (1/6) #ncpol @RaleighReporter @jimmorrill @NCCapitol @PFFPNC

In Sept 2016, as NC Insurance Commissioner & State Fire Marshal I was the keynote speaker at Hamlet's 25th anniversary memorial service. AUDIO file of my remarks HERE >> drive.google.com/file/d/1ikb5u0…

2nd, also wearing my Insurance Commissioner hat, I reflect upon what #LaborDay is about & all the rights + benefits for most workers that were gained only by the blood, sweat, tears, and even lives of workers past. (3/6)

The National Commission for Enterprises in the #UnorganisedSector was set up in 2004 as an advisory body & a watchdog for the #informal sector. This NCEUS report reviews #labour #laws & #SocialSecurity systems that apply to #workers in unorganised sectors. bit.ly/2PhAOEN ImageImageImageImage
It observes that while existing laws have some provisions for conditions of #work for certain workers, there is no comprehensive legal framework for the “basic and minimum conditions of work” for unorganised sector workers.
Therefore, it proposes comprehensive & protective laws for agricultural & non-agricultural workers in the unorganised sector that will regulate conditions of #work, #SocialSecurity, #welfare and #livehood promotion.

If you read one thing about #Brexit today - make it this thread...

EU labour standards underpin majority of labour standards in the UK. They're implemented/protected in the UK because they are required to be by law BUT it’s not just their existence that's important...⬇️
It’s also the progressive way those rights have been interpreted, the requirements for effective and dissuasive sanctions and the requirements for individuals to be able to enforce them. Workers’ rights underpinned by EU law standards include: ⬇️
The fact that these rights are so important is demonstrated by the efforts of Conservative governments to resist them - e.g. resistance to the Acquired Rights Directive, Working Time Directive, Collective Redundancies Directive & Agency Workers Directive. #WorkersRights #Brexit

History will not remember Corbyn kindly as he fudges & obfuscates his way, surrounded by advisors who refuse to see Brexit for what it is.

And this promised land of workers’ rights protections with a @UKLabour deal? The unedifying shame of so few people trying to dupe so many.
There is something seriously contorted about Labour’s insistence they have had “fantastic discussions” on #workersrights with this govt that has shown zero interest in protecting rights, or doing anything other than playing games and spinning time.
I’ve offered privately to speak to @UKLabour MPs about what protection of #workersrights & other rights, means post Brexit. It has not been taken up. We are at crunch time.

I’m starting to conclude Corbyn’s team simply don’t want to hear hard truths.

There may be no term in recent history that clearly demonstrates the importance of the Court’s composition more than this term. During the 2017-2018 #SCOTUS term we have seen a rollback in our civil rights:

✔️Allowing #Ohio to proceed with a process to purge voters for failing to vote. #VotingRights #Husted
✔️Permitting #Texas to use electoral maps that were ruled intentionally racially discriminatory by a federal district court.

Preventing a Brexit disaster - and the austerity this entails - requires more than the #CustomsUnion alone. So here’s a few reasons why Labour’s frontbench must, as a minimum, now also back the #SingleMarket (other than for the famous ‘four freedoms’):
Yes a Customs Union is needed. It helps 20% of our economy. For the other 80% (and growing!) of our economy, which is in ‘services’, we need the Single Market. The right to export UK service expertise is vital.
With 11% of our tax revenues coming from the UK financial services sector (£66bn), we need the Single Market so it can trade on the same basis as financial firms from the other 27 countries. We can’t pay for our NHS, schools, welfare support without this revenue.
