A few quick tweets about the response to my big climate story, one day later. 1/x
First, in terms of readership, the response has been spectacular—beyond our wildest hopes, and a great sign for future climate writing. 2/x
The story has also inspired a very interesting, important debate about how to talk about the scarier potential outcomes of warming. 3/x
Personally, I don’t feel that the fatalism is a bigger risk to the climate than complacency. 4/x
I also feel that there is a very strong case to be made from the principle of transparency: (5/x)
That the public should know what the risks are, including the unlikely-but-plausible ones (6/x)
And that our advocacy, our politics, our consumption patterns and our policy are all better off when they are better informed.
Because I feel that way, I’d recommend particularly the articles that have been written by David Roberts, Kevin Drum, and Susan Mathews.
But I’d also recommend Michael Mann’s Facebook post, and the pieces by Emily Atkin and Robinson Meyer.
(More about @EricHolthaus's criticism in a moment.)
For now, I want to thank everyone who has read the story and everyone who has argued with it.
I am very, very happy so many people are talking about climate change. We still need to do it a lot more. (12/12, I think...)
