Unfortunately, the Rashid Tlaib story is playing out as I predicted. Not a one-day wonder. Obsessive coverage. Multiple op/eds. Panel discussions galore. Because of ONE SENTENCE uttered by a NEW MEMBER OF CONGRESS on her FIRST DAY IN OFFICE. A sign of degradation of discourse. 1
And the degradation of discourse is not about cursing! Something Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, John Boehner, Martha McSally, Joe Biden and oh so many others have done while in public office. As much as anything it is about media bending over backwards to deny liberal bias. 2
To be sure, plenty of people want to reduce coarsened public discourse. And there is a hearty debate to be had about how to handle Trump’s unfitness for office, corruption, lawlessness, etc, etc. (I am with Pelosi and Nadler on this.) But that is not the waynthis has been handled

@RadioFreeTom Trump has systematically shut out those who have tried to curb his reckless impulses. To any who have known or watched him over the years, it was clear that as the Mueller noose tightened, he would take extreme actions for diversion and to protect himself. No matter the damage. 2
@RadioFreeTom There will be more reckless and impulsive acts, possibly including war and declaration of a state of emergency. McConnell, Ryan, Nunes, Graham and others who have enabled and protected him over and over bear a major share of responsibility. They need to limit the damage now. 3

Democracy is being stabbed in the chest tomorrow by Republicans in Wisconsin, and it barely gets a mention on cable news and in major news outlets. Beyond frustrating. The @washingtonpost is right; democracy dies in darkness. And every major news outlet is contributing.
It is not just about whether there are mentions or segments. When the segments are the 3rd, 4th or 5th priorities, that signals that they are not as urgent as they should be. Nullifying elections is the mark of an autocracy. Get away with it, and it will happen again & again
And when the New York Times refers to this outrage as an attempt to “shore up strength,” it is aiding and abetting thse crimes against democracy.

1: Once upon a time in the late 90s, there were common websites, basic cable and magazines that put out various hotlines you could call in a crisis. If not, there were search engines where you could find the numbers to places like BoysTown and the Suicide Prevention Hotline etc.
2: My parents were SUPER controlling. So much so, that we felt the control in every little way, and suspected other means of control that we did not verify until we had all moved out.
