/ Chicago police officer John Catanzara posted this photo of himself on Facebook. Today it went viral—and now he’s being reprimanded.
/ This photo came just days after a photograph of 2 other cops taking a knee went viral. CPD reprimanded them, too. chicago.suntimes.com/news/chicago-c…
/ We’re investigating police accountability and had already #FOIAd complaints. Here’s what we found about Catanzara’s disciplinary history.
/ The records show Catanzara has been an officer since January 1995. He’s been suspended seven times, 111 days in total, for misconduct.
/ It’s rare for misconduct allegations against officers to get upheld. It’s even rarer for an officer to get suspended.
/ Of tens of thousands of CPD officers who began working in 1995 or later, only 7 have been suspended 7 times or more. Catanzara is one.
/ His suspensions range from 6 to 30 days for complaints related to insubordination and other issues.
/ In 2012, CPD tried to fire him, following a recommendation from the city’s police oversight agency. Here’s a summary of that case:
/ Catanzara wasn’t fired. Instead, the Police Board suspended him for 20 days.
/ He’s also been commended by the police department. Here are some of his honors:
/ Here’s what CPD told us about Catanzara’s Facebook photo:
/ We tried to get comment from the officer but couldn’t. But this is what he wrote on his post shared by @ABC7Chicago:
/ We asked for the names of the two cops in the other photo to check their disciplinary histories, too. CPD wouldn’t give them.
/ We’ll keep examining police accountability in Chicago and across Illinois. Tips? Email Jodi.Cohen[at]ProPublica.org
