No love for the EU Institutions, but Leavers like me need to accept #Brexit isn’t going well and has potential for catastrophe.
‘It’ll be alright on the night’ won’t wash. Entire sectors and millions of livelihoods are at stake.
No one who loses their job will give a monkeys about the ECJ and the budget. This is obvious but apparently escapes some Leavers.
Unless there’s a dramatic change of course - EEA/SM/CU/Euratom, no one with a grasp of reality can continue to support Leave.
Anyone who wants something in politics ‘at any cost’ may as well just join the Taliban. Too many Leavers are sounding like that.
So I’m out. I cannot support destroying an economy we’ve spent 40 years building.

So seems point 1 is an extension/elucidation of what @DLidington told #r4today on Dec 14.

FWIW am told by Brussels sources this is now focus of UK 'ask' on reassurances/ clarifications. To set clear aspiration date for trade deal to avoid backstop /1

@DLidington @DavidHenigUK This is not least because even if you think a 'quick and dirty' deal is doable on some aspects (you hear some discussion of this) the UK would STILL need to know what it wanted.

And as the Political Declaration makes painfully clear, it doesn't know. Or cannot agree rather. /3

3/ The promise of Brexit was that it would make Britain feel big again. “Britain is special,” the Brexiteers assured British voters, who cast their ballots accordingly. But Brexit has proven that for the first time in modern history, Britain is small.

As a remoaner I have long not accepted the result of #brexit however I have been persuaded by a new brexlutionary kind of democratic legitimacy
The leavers never accepted the 67/33 result of the 1975 referendum and campaigned for 40yrs to overturn it. It follows therefore I should shut up and accept #Brexit
Nigel farage said 52 48 would be unfinished business by a long way and had it been a narrow remain vote he'd have been demanding a 2nd ref so obviously It is outrageous that #Brexit are doing exactly what farage would have done

Love insightful perspectives of @Sime0nStylites @jdportes and Pete North on the unfolding #brexit debacle. Like many, I'm sense-making about whether there's a non-catastrophic way through, given fundamental errors in negotiating strategy so far. Thread /1
First, polls show "Remain" is the most popular single option, and other threads argue why a #peoplesvote is the right thing. That's not what this thread is about. The Q is whether errors to date have foreclosed any non-catastrophic outcomes for those who prefer to leave /2
The EU position, arguably reflected in A50 is to set a deadline, then require a withdrawal agreement to be concluded, and then to negotiate future trade arrangements. This approach is well designed (understandably) to exert collective dominance over any leaving member. /3

#Brexit as a concept is increasingly drifting from having anything whatsoever to do with the mechanics of leaving the EU. It is now primarily a culture war and both sides will totally ignore the details except for when they are temporarily convenient.
The consequence of this is that our future relationship with the EU will be just as readily ignored as our activities as a member. They said Brexit would make us isolated, self absorbed and insular but it seems that was always the case and there are no signs of that changing.
As ever the details will be delegated to officials and civil servants while our establishment politics drifts further into its cycle of decline, unable to usefully influence external events making us entirely passive and reactive to events rather than self-interestedly engaged.

A couple of noteworthy points:
/1
(1) As expected, Com demands that whole of EU acquis should continue to apply to the UK, incl. all four freedoms, Euroatom, justice and home affairs, even down to the current UK's opt out regime.

This crucially includes primacy of EU law and direct effect
(2) UK will no longer benefit from EU FTAs during transition. This is detrimental to UK economy, but also implies that it may strike its own FTAs during transition.
