Haiti is a reflection of more than 200 years of poor leadership. It hasn't been a stable country since its independence in 1804 (declared in 1803). It's first leader immediately ordered the slaughter of all remaining French and Creole inhabitants torturing and killing them.
That same leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines would be assassinated in October 1806 for atrocities against the Haitian people. He also used the practice of Corvee, which is a form of indentured servitude to government where laborers were forced to work without pay for the government.
This practice continued under other leaders even through the US occupation from 1915 to 1934 after Haitians assassinated another president there.
Another of Haiti's presidents, Jean-Pierre Boyer, put the country billions of dollars in debt which it suffered under for nearly 100 years after his terms in office ended in 1843. It took until 1943 for it finally overcome the debt.
Haiti is known for human trafficking, disease, poverty, and still has an estimated 237,000 plus people enslaved. These people live under the Restavik System which meets the formal internationally recognized definition of slavery.
Haiti has also been victimized by the Clintons which is where the comments about the Clintons come from. A good portion of aid that went to Haiti went through the Clinton Foundation and never was used in Haiti.
In effect, depriving Haiti of at least some of the aid that was sent to it hampering relief efforts after the 2010 earthquake. Wyclef Jean, who is a Haitian American was also accused of skimming funds for Haiti. businessinsider.com/wyclefs-haiti-…
In Haiti's more recent history it was run by brutal thugs like Papa Doc Duvalier, Baby Doc Duvalier, Jean Bertrand Aristide (Bill Clinton restored him to power), & Raoul Cedras whom Clinton gave access to $79 million to return Aristide to power he was later exiled to S. Africa.
Ignoring how places like Haiti are in terrible condition is not helping those places. Perhaps instead of acting like these are great places to live we should apply pressure to their governments to act better on behalf of their citizens.
Domincan Republic & Haiti occupy the same Island of Hispaniola, but Haiti remains far below income levels and education of its neighbor. If people think that Haiti & similar nations aren't bad places why aren't they investing there & creating businesses?
The outrage shouldn't be over whether a US politician used a derogatory term to describe a place. The outrage should be over how that nation's government can squander billions in international aid over decades without making any progress for its people.
Also, for our illustrious politicians. Exactly which country do you think has a higher educated population Norway or Haiti? How about between Haiti or Somalia? Haiti and Egypt? Haiti and South Africa? Or between any of those nations. Stop fake outrage.
