Here is the problem with attributing bots to a certain location or person. Let's say for example you buy 1000 Twitter accounts to run a campaign and you bind them all to a proxy in Canada. Are those Canadian bots?

I spent the past 2 days reading this 40 page request for funding for "Phase 2" of the Integrity Initiative. This is the most dystopian thing I've ever heard of. 3/ How will journalists know if any of their sources are in these clusters? Will the cluster members be stating their affiliations to journalists? Will articles be labeled? Or is this research going to be presented to the public with no attribution to a government-funded group?

One thing I've noticed in nearly 4 years of tracking Twitter bots is how in every country where they are active, people not only recognize what they are but they also give them nicknames.
For example in Mexico they're called "peñabots." I don't think anyone believes Enrique Peña Nieto is running a propaganda botnet out of the basement of the Casa Blanca but this is the umbrella term that's been adopted to generally call out any kind of fakery on MX social media.
In Mexico they sometimes name them after other politicians too. Like when (former) senator Omar Fayad tried to pass a terrible internet bill in 2015, fake accounts filled his mentions with sycophantic praise of the bill. Those accounts were called "FayadBots"

So for the first time in quite a while a newcomer hashtag had top spot on the #Hamilton68 Dashboard -- #walkaway. We remembered seeing this hashtag in the past few weeks but didnt really know what it was or follow up on it. #infosec #opsec dashboard.securingdemocracy.org
The background story on this hashtag #walkaway is a little strange & the number of bots, trolls, & fake testimonial promoting this hashtag is even stranger. Here's an example of a completely fake tweet highlighted by @daveweigel #opsec #infosec
