attended a crypto dinner hosted by @a16z /@ali01 last night. Ali asked everyone for one controversial opinion. here are my notes! (opinions ethically published with consent from attendees 😇)
from @ali01 (a16z): every piece of crypto-infrastructure will wind up being commoditized. "economic routers" will sit one layer above and route away from platforms that have excess pricing power or profits
from @AriannaSimpson (Autonomous Partners): in today's crypto environment, it's easy to make money, but hard not to die. 5 years out, the winners will be the ones that successfully weathered potential catastrophes, like hacks or redemptions / forced liquidation in bear markets
from @z1awrence (@1protocolinc): too much emphasis on making smart contracting languages dev-friendly & familiar. we need to focus on security and correctness first.
(my note: i'm skeptical this will happen, see Worse is Better: jwz.org/doc/worse-is-b… … js is a virus)
from @jessewldn (@a16z): we pay a lot of attention to technical details and the protocol, but the value may accrue based on softer human things like identity, values, and brand appeal
from @mhluongo (@keep_project): proof of stake and its trust in "skin in the game" is a nice idea, but still unproven. not certain it will work until we see it successfully deployed.
from @ljxie (@scalarcapital) not sure about algorithmic stablecoins - if an entity with name-brand trust and recognition among consumers, like Fidelity, entered the space, they could clean up. (aware of TrustToken / TrueUSD - but they don't yet have brand power.)
from @JTremback (@Altheamesh): It's not proven yet whether decentralized tech can be more efficient / cost effective than centralized. Prices on AWS, etc may be persistently lower
(my 2c: if "cost" is more than just price, but also friction, etc, decentratech may win there)
from @ericsson_axel (@1protocolinc): adverse selection effect among crypto projects targetting a common meme, like "banking the unbanked". obvious, common goal implies they may not be thinking deeply about the space
from @Iiterature (@a16z): vision of decentralization that we're pushing won't scale to mainstream, because the distribution of value is too skewed to early adopters.
(this resonated with me - generating enormous returns for early adopters is problematic / more inequality)
finally, me (sourcecred), "evocative" opinion: money today is based on thousands-year-old math, crypto's ambition should be greater: creating that which is to money as vector calculus is to scalar arithmetic. able to represent many different kinds of value, with gradients.
here's another opinion which is maybe more controversial: once crypto creates rewards for building open projects, video game industry will be revolutionized. closed-source approaches wont compete w/ the amount of amazing talent + enthusiasm available by opening development
