1) @ThomasWictor just did his thread on
military deception operations, many of our most ambitious (publicly known) ones occurring during WW2, including the creation of entire fake army groups. However, I think there's another layer to this deception.
2) An interesting facet from the Cold War: as part of intelligence gathering operations, the US army stationed along the border between NATO countries and USSR puppets/the COMINTERN/whatever the hell you want to call them were part of deception operations too
3) They needed to gather intelligence on how Russians would react to an American offensive. So, entire tank regiments would launch an 'attack' on the border, forming up as if they were doing a spearhead or whatever other tactics they liked, did a nosedive all along the border...
4) And then would stop just short and watch. Watch how the Russians scrambled their military. Listen to radio traffic. Watch the chain of command. See where fighters were scrambled from. Who talked to who. How did they react.
5) The key to this kind of deception? Convince the Russians they were about to be attacked.
6) In the age of social media, well, we were caught up in the deception too, convinced that a war was about to break out. Hell, I'm still thinking we're going to launch a strike here in the next few days. But here's how I'd be wrong.
7) First, ratchet up the tension. Its poker, and your job is convincing everyone your hand is a full house of missile and air strikes.
8) When you have to bluff the entire world
9) You get the best fucking bluffer in the entire goddamn world to do it for you
10) You talk up how you're going to launch missiles goddamn EVERYWHERE
11) Even though you no longer even publish your missile defense testing schedule >.>
12) in this kind of bluff, you need to both convince everyone WHAT you're threatening to do, and WHY you're going to do it reuters.com/article/us-mid…
13) Remember this step? Now THE ENTIRE WORLD is watching. Hey, if you're going to bluff the entire world, might as well get the entire world to help you watch!
14) Watch the enemy to see where they flee from
15) Watch the enemy to see where they flee TO
16) Watch who calls who
17) Watch EVERYONE who's making reactions
18) And test how easy they are to push around in a panic.
19) And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how you bluff the entire world to make your enemies reveal ALL of their plans, standard operating procedures, and exactly what they would do if they were under attack.
20) Oh, what will we ACTUALLY do? I dunno, probably steamroll them with sanctions or something. Cancel the Iran deal. You know, fun shit like that. /end reuters.com/article/us-ira…
