Even if that ticket says nonrefundable, CALL your airline/Amtrak/bus co and explain the situation. Offer to provide documentation. Many will at least give you a credit if not a refund.
If you booked nonrefundable lodging through Priceline, CALL THE HOTEL DIRECTLY FIRST. Tell them the situation and that you booked though Priceline and ask they would be willing to cancel the reservation under the circumstances. Get the name of the person you spoke with.
You will then need to call Priceline. They'll tell you it's n ok nonrefundable, but let them know that you've already spoken with the hotel and they agreed to cancel. Give them the name of the person you spoke with. They will then contact the hotel for confirmation.
Often the hotel will agree and you'll have your refund in 24 hours or so. I hope this helps someone.
