I saw this tweet this morning and thought a lot about it on my ride in today. I have some thoughts...

Re: "silicon valley tech culture of jumping ship every few months"

Moving companies every year or two is most definitely one of the best ways to increase your salary level.
Most tech companies are terrible about rewarding long-term employees with salary increases vs. with the salaries that they pay new hires.

On the average, hopping jobs every, say, 18 months will probably net you 30%-40% higher salary compared to staying at one job for 5 years.
You want your employees to not be mercenary? You want to retain that institutional knowledge? Then what are you doing then to reward your employees in a ways that make them want to stay?
Do you make sure your existing employees' salaries keep pace with the salaries of new hires you are bringing in (most tech companies do not)? Do you train your existing staff and offer them enough opportunities for advancement?
Do you have a non-toxic culture, stable management, competent leadership, and coherent planning? Do you allow self-organizing teams and give people time to form good working relationships with their peers?
If you're doing these things, I applaud you, and you will probably not have any retention issues, but you have to realize this is *not* the norm. You want your employees to not be hopping jobs? then you need to provide these things in return.
