Thread: grant submission experiences as a #PI vs. trainee…with sides of serious and comical.

#AcademicTwitter @AcademicChatter This week I worked alongside some of my #EPCHL team members (#postdocs, #PhD students) and colleagues to submit 2 applications (was involved in a 3rd). Same competition, same deadline.

Thanks @EmilyRCox14 !
I've re-pasted my prior comments here in one thread as it's hard to find amidst all the comments (see below) These are key issues and happy to see such great discussions. From personal experience working w/ athletic to now #cardiacrehabilitation (~80% male attendance) populations, recruiting females is challenging. Just b/c it is tough, does not mean we should not strive for balance.

(1/6) I'm so honoured and excited to share that I've been awarded research funds from @HeartandStroke to support a randomized trial examining exercise training strategies (e.g. HIIT) in women with #heartdisease ♥️ @UOHIResearch @HeartInstitute (2/6) Heart disease is the number one killer of women over 35 years.

Women are Understudied, Underdiagnosed, and Undertreated.

It's time for change!

A thread on why I run. Self-care in academia. #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #AcademicWriting I returned from my maternity leave a few weeks early to submit grant proposals…for fear/the unknown of the financial implications of COVID-19 on my research program and team.

It's #MoveMonday #20!

Keep #active for your physical and mental health during #COVID-19. There are lots of options for #exercise outdoors (e.g. walking, jogging, lunges) and inside (e.g. YouTube exercise video, follow @l_giangregorio ) A 45-minute stroller walk with 👶 for #MoveMonday, and look what I found ⬇️ Strunk and White 🙌#AcademicTwitter #academicwritting Image

#Publication alert for #InternationalWomenDay2020 (1/3): Lessons learned from community- and home-based physical activity programs: A narrative review of factors influencing women’s participation in cardiac rehabilitation… in @escardio. (2/3) #PressRelease:…

A 1st of many: 1st publication (and 1st first author) for my PhD student @sol_vidalalmela (International Woman!), and 1st for honours student Brenna Czajkowski. It's so important to take a moment to reflect on this achievement! 👏👏

For all those who ❤️for a “behind the scenes” #tweetorial on our BEST study:…
@CHeartsTrees @J_HarrisPT @BruceyMd @ProfJohnBuckley @lisacotie @DrAndrewPipe The @HeartInstitute houses 1 of the largest #cardiac #rehabilitation programs in 🇨🇦. Even with our resources and infrastructure, we cannot accommodate cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to measure VO2peak for each and every patient before their 1st cardiac rehab class.

(1/2) This directly hits home, esp as a PhD graduate of the Women’s Health & Exercise Lab @PSUKINESGrad, & now Director of the Exercise Physiology and ❤️ Lab @HeartInstitute. It’s critical to include men and women, and analyze the results separately to look for #sex-differences. If you have published #exercise #research including men and women: (1) tweet your publication link(s), & (2) tag a colleague who’s done the same. Let’s make this thread epic with lists of great sex-based exercise research… @DrKimWay @jenna_c_gibbs

Interested in translating your work to the 🇨🇦 ⚽️community? (1/2) Not my typical exercise and women's heart health post...The recent events in the US have encouraged me to reflect as a #Canadian #WomenInSTEM Stem on inclusivity and openness in my research team. (2/4) I welcome and celebrate my team whose cultures and traditions span from Canada, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Japan, India & Australia. There’s more I can surely do, but at the very least I hope I am accessible and open-minded for #inclusivity and #diversity discussions and action.

1. #TBThursday to the first paper I published on #women's #health and #exercise:… A few important lessons learned I try to remember with every paper I write or contribute to: 1. Keep an excel statistical workbook for analyses run and highlight values used in Tables and text (super helpful for later verifying data when PI asks and during proofing stage). E.g. screen shot.
