🧵We often refer our patients for "neuropsychological" testing but what exactly is it, do you need it, and how does it add value? A thread. 1/10 @CIBScenter
Neuropsychological testing - also known as cognitive testing - aims to provide a comprehensive look at key areas of your cognitive functioning - aspects of your memory, attention, processing speed, executive functioning and more. It is a "deep dive." 2/10
Neuropsychological testing contrasts with cognitive screening (CS). Often 5 or 10 or so minutes in length. CS has a valuable place and a role to play but it provides a brief glimpse, has limitations especially in mild cases, and is not diagnostic. @CIBScenter 3/10

Mid-foot bone stress injuries can be tricky to manage.

People often make the mistake of treating them as an ankle injury.

To achieve successful outcomes it is vital to challenge the foot and be progressive through an isolate then integrate approach.

🧵on our rationale 1/11
Footballer - Midfoot bone stress injury.

Video 1: Peroneus brevis.

In plantarflexed positions peroneus brevis produces ankle eversion prior to heel strike.
Video 2: Peroneus longus.

Case of a man who shaved only on right side of face
1. 70-year-old man was brought to OPD three months ago by his son, with a complaint that he had stopped shaving on left side of face for one week. He was also not using his left hand even though he had no weakness in that hand.
2. This abnormal "behavior" started all of a sudden.
When his family members pointed this oddity, he retorted by saying, the left side of face did not belong to him.
Even when he was presented with water or tea from left side, he would stretch his right hand to receive them.
3. Family members were taken aback by his "odd behavior" and decided to seek medical opinion.
His BP was 170/110 mmHg and blood sugar was normal.
He had no known medical illness. #MedTwitter #neurotwitter

My kid has #asthma & a severe, life-threatening dairy #allergy. We’ve been fought by @wilcoxprincipal and now @TwinsburgSupt every step of the way to get our child a section 504 plan. I want my kid alive with access to aninhaler, not dead with a law named after him. #disability
This is a story about how school district administration will fight you every step of the way when all you want them to do is comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA), #IDEA, or #Rehabilitation Act. It’s a story about intentional delay and confusion they sow.
First, the school’s principal Mrs. Villa Turner and school nurse tried to talk us out of a 504 plan. They discouraged it saying an unenforceable “health plan” would be sufficient because the staff deals with this all the time and is “trained.” More on “trained” later.

1/16 Über meine Überlegungen zum Beitrag @WernerBartens, in dem er sich fragt, warum "Patienten mit #MECFS und #LongCovid auf einer organischen Ursache beharren?"

Here, we aimed to assess longitudinal performance in language and other cognitive domains important for academic success in young adults with acquired brain injury (ABI) participating in intensive rehab Image
22 young adults with ABI (#stroke, traumatic brain injury (#TBI), tumor, encephalitis) attended ≥ 12-week semester of the Intensive Cognitive and Communication Rehabilitation program. The program (lectures, individual therapy, tech. training), was held 6 hours/day, 4 days/week. Image
14 young adults with ABI served as deferred treatment/usual care control participants. All participants demonstrated language and/or other cognitive impairment on a standardized assessment battery (WAB, RBANS, SCCAN, DCT) administered before/after each semester.

This #InternationalWomensDay2022 let’s revisit the progressive judgments of the Indian Courts reaffirming the rights of the women and providing them better protection of the law.

#ICLU celebrates 21 judgments of the #SupremeCourt on this #WomensDay
1. The Apex Court providing for detailed guidelines for safety of women at workplace in Vishakha & Ors. v. State of Rajasthan & Ors. (1997) directed employers to provide a mechanism for redressal of grievances of employees. (1/2)

A thread on the Assessment of Need: the statutory process by which children whose parents have concerns about potential disability can be assessed.

The process has recently been changed by the HSE in a manner that is frankly appalling.

Explanation: (1/n)
Parents might apply for AoN for a child due to concerns about development- in my clinic, the commonest reason is queried autism.

Previously, the AoN involved a team (usually physio, OT, SLT, psychology) assessing a child to get insight into the nature of their difficulties (2/n)
The team conducted a series of assessments, usually taking several hours each, and produced a report giving a detailed analysis of how a child is doing, what the causes of their difficulties might be, suggesting a diagnosis if appropriate, and giving advice on next steps (3/n)

THREAD: I hope this mistake can be used as an opportunity to learn why this kind of language is bad.

The Minister isn't the only person to say things like this- I've even heard parents of kids with autism refer to other children as "normal" & have had to rearrange my face. (1/n)
The hard thing for those of us working in/ living with disability is that this is a mistake we'd NEVER make.

For others (who don't live and breathe disability), saying "normal children" is probably a slip of the tongue- not a betrayal of them secretly being awful people. (2/n)
Given her portfolio this is a bad gaffe for the Minister which has upset people. Rather than piling on, it would be better to use this as a rare opportunity for other people to learn why language matters so deeply in disability and why this kind of thing is so wounding. (3/n)
