Theresa May is still committed to reducing net migration to the 10,000s. I wonder how she will do it? politicshome.com/news/uk/home-a… 1/
Maybe by deporting British citizens to Jamaica? I thought the UK stopped doing that in the 19th century. New Home Secretary says 32 of them were criminals. That makes it alright then? Also, I'd like to see you without income etc and see how you get on telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/05/1… 2/
Or maybe by deporting you because HMRC made an error on your tax return and you try to amend it in good faith. You lose your job and your home. theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/m… 3/
Or maybe by axing a visa scheme and route to Indefinite Leave to Remain just like that, leaving thousands of entrepreneurs who came here believing they could settle in limbo. rsl-law.co.uk/publications/n… 4/
Or maybe by denying thousands of Commonwealth citizens care and rights after they lived here for 50+ years paying taxes and working. Just last week I met a British citizen whose mother was Australian - lived here for decades - while she was dying NHS care was being denied 5/
Or maybe by deporting 50,000 students in error, claiming they were not genuine students (but they were) independent.co.uk/student/news/t… 6/
Or maybe by denying people citizenship after they fulfilled all the criteria because the UK moved the goalposts yet again theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/m… 7/
There are scores of other examples. And yet, net migration is still "too high". Did you know the British people have had a change of heart? They seem to realise migrants are useful after all. Listen to this ft.com/content/c6c607… 8/
Oh by the way can *anyone* explain to me why the net migration numbers aren't revised downward in the light of this? Apparently there are only 5000 student visa overstayers, not 100,000. Why isn't this reflected in the numbers? 9/ theguardian.com/education/2017…
Could it be because
1. the way net migration is measured is incompetent and not fit for purpose (by asking people on airports and guestimating and extrapolating. Weird if you think how obsessed the UK is with immigration)
or 10/
2. it's politically advantageous to grossly overestimate the number of migrants coming in. After all, you've got nothing. Your trains don't work, your NHS is falling apart, your social care is gutted, children are going hungry, millennials can't afford houses. 11/
The only thing you've got left is getting down to that magic number of 100,000. I am also still struggling to understand why 100,000 is "sustainable" and 200,000 or 300,000 is not. Did you do any serious projections? 12/
Also, it would've helped if you poured the net taxes I and other non-UK nationals pay into public services and infrastructure rather than enriching your upper class with further tax cuts. /ends
