1/ Today, I wanted to talk about ENS. ENS stands for Ethereum Name Service. It makes a mapping between something complicated & human readable. Like, domains to IPs. Token addresses to domains (bob.eth). Check it out: ens.domains
2/ ENS is already on mainnet. You can start registering domains now. The controls that maintain the registrar will be reset but you can migrate your domain when things are permanent. Remember, when nobody cared about domains in early 90s...
3/ ENS is already gaining ground. Future integrations with MyEtherWallet, Status, Metamask, Etherscan, etc. 🚀. It's just happening. There's no BD person or sales team.
4/ Oh & you know what? ENS is very underhyped: No tokensale, No ICO, No instant multi-millionaires, No scamming. Just hard working developers (@nicksdjohnson) who have a real working product that may fundamentally change the Internet.
5/ There are a lot of companies vying to be the basis of identity but, if we've learned anything from FB, people want control. Solving for identity means real-world apps can be decentralized (via a review system. ENS domains -> ENS email -> Identity. People will build on top.
6/ ENS is also working on integrating with the existing system of domain resolution by working with the TLDs. So, it's not re-inventing the wheel. Not a competitor to the existing system of record.
7/ There's a lot of BS projects in the crypto world. This is the real deal. Great job ENS developer team! Your altruism is inspiring in a world where most are optimizing to try to get rich vs make an impact. Thank you for building a major building an important building block.
8/ Why does it matter to you? You can use the ENS code base to make your own system of record for resource mapping. Decentralize auth, email addr, 📪, phone #s, etc.
