overflow seating outside the albemarle charlottesville regional jail for the jail board meeting. at least it isn’t 35 degrees this time.
plus they put out chairs this time instead of picnic tables. so... better?
matters by the public opening strong: several members of the community speaking out against ACRJ’s choice to work with ICE.
“you are not keeping families safe, you are tearing them apart”
“weighing the gravity of someone who was driving without a license vs sending them to a place where they may be killed... i really don’t think we should be a part of that.”
there is no reason to notify ICE when members of this community are released from ACRJ.
“the jail board’s policy is not consistent with the values of this community.”
“it’s entirely inappropriate what we’re doing.”
public comment is strong, consistent, and condemns the policy this board voted to uphold in january.
“immigrants are not a danger to our communities. ICE is a danger to our community.”
“no human being belongs in a cage.”
“stop colluding with ICE.”
👏👏👏
“i demand that you put the issue of voluntary ICE notifications on the agenda for september and vote to end the policy.”
community member now reading a letter signed by many community groups, including @CvilleDSA (i’ll post full text later!)
several speakers throwing the “we don’t know what we don’t know” language we heard so much of from ICE & ACRJ at the january hearing back at thb4pp
“i can’t tell you what it’s like to sit with a six year old whose family has been deported.”
a teacher & theologian tells us about a 6yr old whose cousins were deported & later murdered.
“it is predictable: if you send people to ICE, people will be killed.”
a member of the board now clarifying that ACRJ has no contract with ICE, does not receive any money from ICE, and does not hold people beyond their release date. they’re just cooperating with ICE for free out of the goodness of their hearts.
“we are aware that we’re not legally required to participate in this” voluntary notification of ICE about release dates.
we know we don’t have to, we just help ICE tear families apart ‘cause we like it!
“i see hands raised. we’re not gonna entertain questions from the public to the board.”
a deputy has popped his head outside to ask if anyone in overflow seating would like to make a public comment, though.
“it seems like september is too long to wait.” this speaker urges them to convene an emergency meeting sooner than september to vote on discontinuing this policy.
board re: ICE’s zero tolerance policy — “they place no relevance on the local charges.”
“if the person is in this country illegally, they want to take custody of that person.”
he cites an example of a man picked up for a drunk in public. (he was not convicted but was deported.)
“we do not make the decision of when to notify ICE based on the charges.” our regional jail voluntarily notifies ICE of all undocumented people released from their facility.
jail board: “as you can imagine, we don’t keep readily available stats on this.”
no, no actually i imagined you would have better records of whether or not you are sending people to immigrant labor camps.
“they want everybody who they determine is here illegally.”

“who they determine”

latimes.com/local/lanow/la…
jail board: “not in all cases... but in some cases, ICE has information that is paramount to public safety.”
“every now and then there is a case like that.”
“most people would be comfortable with those people being turned over to immigration and customs enforcement.”
“is the policy a ‘have-to’ or a ‘like-to?’ it’s a request.”
one that you bootlickers happily oblige.
member of the board suggests they have a specially-called work session meeting to discuss and vote on this issue before september.
four members of the board are not present at this meeting. lot of handwringing about this.
i hope diantha mckeel is learning a lot on the #CvillePilgrimage, but i also sincerely hope she watches the public comment from this meeting.

adjourned after just over an hour. they’re gonna talk about talking about thinking about whether they can hold a special meeting to discuss the issue before their september meeting.
