SO a character used the term "pollywog" to refer to our protagonist, which is a nautical term for someone who has not crossed the equator.

I'm not sure what to do, because I did not use the slur and never would, but I don't know if the sorta-resemblance in terms is an issue.
The ship is described as "taking flight" so the canal is not an issue

Yeah but whose goals does it further? How will it be used? Aside from the betterment of mankind, Aeolia has no apparent interest in the consequences of what it’s doing; at this point it’s a question of whether you believe in their quest for knowledge

It would not have been pretty
Most people know that artifacts are dangerous—hence the hesitation—but this protagonist specifically doesn’t know enough about them to tell when one is VERY dangerous. Pretty much the smaller the artifact the trickier it is.
Things like the lode-engines are, for unknown reasons, pretty safe. It’s the little trinket-looking things that are Trouble.
Let’s just say it would have been the first CYOA where the protagonist actually dies.
The eponymous Nightmare Gauntlet allows direct, though imperfect, interface between minds+
Since Aeolia is crowded with minds, all of them alien, all of them machines, the protagonist wouldn’t have been able to process the input; their consciousness would have been shredded. At best, they would have survived in the clock tower as a fragment of awareness+
It must be emphasized that this is the Gauntlet’s effect in HUMAN hands. For the builders, it may have done something very different.
