1/ We want to address something now which is key to the entire Brexit debate. It takes the form of two questions with one answer: 
2/ People have busy lives. Even we political obsessives are staggered by the complexities of Parliamentary systems, International law and global trade. Its a lot to take in...
3/ And when a member of the public (leaver or remainer) sees the EU signing trade deals with Canada 🇨🇦, Japan🇯🇵 etc, they ask a sensible and legitimate question - why can't they sign such a deal with the UK? euractiv.com/section/climat…
4/ And the answer is - The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May MP has RULED OUT such a deal! Don't believe us? We can prove it.
5/ In her Florence speech of September 2017 (link below) Mrs May said two key things - (1). that the EU-Canada deal was the most advanced it had ever signed. (2). That such a deal would not be a suitable template for the UK. gov.uk/government/spe…
6/ Mrs May has ruled out a CETA type deal 🇨🇦 because in her words "it would nevertheless represent such a restriction on our mutual market access that it would benefit neither of our economies." But there aren't many ways to get better EU market access than CETA allows.
7/ One way to get better market access would be to go down the EEA/EFTA route. But Mrs May also ruled this out in her Florence speech. She mistakenly believes that the EFTA/EEA states follow all EU rules.
8/ So there you have it. The reason that the UK isn't signing a Canada type deal with the EU is because Mrs May has ruled one out. The reason we aren't signing up to EFTA/EEA is because she doesn't understand that model. So is there a solution?
