Love that people are acting like the concept of “thin privilege” is new and that it doesn’t exist. HAHAHA that’s cute. I think the “privilege” word is what people may be finding problematic. But to suggest that people “choose” to be fat is offensive and simply untrue.
As someone who has been told by multiple doctors regarding my #PCOS and weight loss “I’m sorry you’re basically just screwed” I really get my back up about this.
Not that I even consider myself “overweight”. But I am on medications that at BEST keep me where I am. If I don’t also eat properly, I would continue to gain and gain. Which sucks. Dieting to maintain your weight? Feels awful.
Prior to developing PCOS, when I was at my thinnest as a young adult (from obsessive exercising and starving myself) I was cast in “fat girl” roles, I had men make comments about me being “too chubby” for them, AND I WAS A SIZE 10.
We live in a society where people associate health with low weight and this is a fallacy. It creates the idea that if you appear at all “overweight” you are unhealthy. And therefore, to many, undesirable in some way. This thinking damages young girls every fucking day.
Women’s number one fear on dates? Being raped or killed. Men’s number one? That the woman is fat.
I see the argument that we are lucky if we are overweight because we can afford to be. I will remind you THERE ARE HORMONAL DISORDERS THAT LITERALLY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW MUCH/LITTLE YOU EAT OR HOW MUCH/LITTLE YOU EXERCISE.
I know many overweight people will roll their eyes that I, a size 12 woman, is making these arguments as I’m not “that big”. But THAT’S the problem! If this issue touches healthy people at my size we have a problem.
Thus bringing me to my original point. Thin privilege exists, it is pervasive and it’s important to talk about.
