I genuinely want to know if there are people who screamed bloody murder about Facebook's data privacy issues but who also used one of these 23&Me kits. I will never understand why people use these. You're literally giving your DNA to a for-profit company.
I mean, yes, our data should be private when we want it to be. But why are so many so upset at the ethical implications of seeing an ad for a thing you might want to buy but I see virtually no outcry about the ethical implications of handing over YOUR LITERAL DNA?
There is ZERO DOUBT in my mind that giving your DNA to companies like 23&Me will absolutely lead to health insurance companies rejecting you because your chance of developing cancer is statistically higher according to your DNA.

(But OH NO I saw an ad for shoes I searched for!)

(1) In Norse culture textiles were a very gendered thing: only women made yarn and turned yarn into cloth. And YET...cloth was so immensely valuable that it was literally CURRENCY for 800 YEARS. Now think about how often people degrade spinning, knitting, sewing as silly hobbies.
(2) The notion that the Inuit couldn't have *possibly* known how to spin yarn themselves, and that only Nordic white people could have brought that skill to them. NEWP! The author says that he's not sure why "the idea of indigenous fiber technology [is] shocking".

So this is the Merino fleece I've been working on, from a sheep named Thor (sadly, I don't have a pic of Thor, even though I met him). Last night I decided to try a new (to me) method of washing Merino fleece -- Margaret Stove's method. I learned about it recently.
Now, check this method out: you pull out individual locks from the fleece. You dip the lock into very, very hot water. You rub it on a bar of soap. You dip it again until the water runs clean, and you press the water out and lay it on a towel to dry.
Even to other handspinners -- who, by nature, do time-intensive things -- this method sounds insane when I describe what I'm doing. "That has to take FOREVER!" They cry. But I tried it last night, and now I will NEVER WASH MERINO ANOTHER WAY AGAIN. This is GLORIOUS.

My 7yo told me today that he wants to make a holiday where “we give money and do things for poor people.” I said we don’t need a holiday, we can do that every day. He said, “but then kids can do it, too,” meaning that we’d just all have a day of service to the poor.
I told him that in lieu of a national holiday, since I don’t have that kind of pull, we’ll put together a fundraiser. His dad and I will each double match whatever he gives from his own money. I gave him some topics as ideas — he immediately chose food for hungry kids.
I asked him how much of his chore-earned money from his wallet he wanted to give. “All of it,” he said, looking at me like it was kind of a dumb question.

I only joined the trans debate a few months ago & was seriously jolted by the conclusion I reached. It didn't sit with my lifelong bleeding heart lefty view of myself. I've struggled with it ever since so still question myself all the time, wondering if I'm wrong. SHORT THREAD.
What it comes down to is TAs assertion that they *are* women & my belief that they're not. We can't both be right. I don't think they're women because to me it's an entirely sex-based, biological fact. Women are female. People with penises are male.
So I've been trying really hard to understand their viewpoint, that they are women because they *feel* they are. And I've really pondered, as a woman, what I *feel* that confirms I'm a woman.

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers

People interested in #myhealthrecord might also be interested in new legislation being introduced which will over-ride the Privacy Act to allow sharing of your administrative data datacommissioner.gov.au #Auspol
In case it isn't obvious, gov needs this new Act because the Privacy Act prevents them from joining all your administrative data into one big project using info you provided in the last census.
The reason no one knows about this is because data governance frameworks are apparently a boring topic the media doesn't want to talk about.
