1. We don't actually know if votes were altered or registrations affected by Russians in 2016. There has been no adequate investigation - partially because we don't have a comprehensive way to do so and partially because our gov is probably afraid to look in that dark corner.
2. We do know we were attacked in a sophisticated and multi-pronged military-level campaign. We know people were manipulated through social media and targeted ads, we know individuals and political campaigns were targeted. We also know they're doing it again.
3. The GRU has already inserted itself in Florida election systems - one of it's targets from 2016. Without adequate protection, they are positioned to attack the systems. The government must act...but, what can we do as voters in the face of all this?
4. Vote en masse, for one. It's much harder to alter results with wide margins than narrow margins. Vote early or absentee - utilize paper ballots if possible. Spend the rest of the time on #GOTV efforts to get out every possible vote.
5. Check your voter registration regularly and often. Don't wait and find out the hard way you have been purged from the voter rolls. You can do this here: iwillvote.com
6. Educate those around you - not just on social media, but in real life. We can't afford to politely not discuss politics in these times. Let people know about the issues, the candidates, the attacks on our democracy. Make sure they are registered to vote.
7. Make sure they have proper voter id if they need it and help them obtain it if they don't. Show them how to check their registration. Arrange carpools to help people make it to the polls to vote.
8. Call your Secretary of State and ask them what is being done in your state to protect the election systems. Start petitions to apply pressure on your voting precincts to make security a priority.
9. Our administration and GOP controlled Congress have not taken adequate action to protect our democracy, but, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing everything we can to fight for it as citizens.
