How many times have I seen blogs label an attacker a terrorist before anything was known about him? How many times has a breaking news hashtag been used by trolls for hoaxes? If those surface as "alternative opinions" the problem will be so much worse.
The next time someone labels me or a colleague as a suspect, or the next time someone fakes one of our tweets, will it be surrounded by debunks? If it's during a breaking news situation, who will call out those hoaxes?
Will Twitter hire online investigators specifically to refute the junk on its site? Or will it keep relying on the free labour of journalists and researchers to make these features work?
And what about memes? Non-mainstream news and attacks that don't regularly don't get refuted? Video-based misinformation?
Anyway, it seems like in a bid to avoid knee-jerk reactions, Twitter's new ideas are a knee-jerk reaction. They've had years to think about these problems and the only good idea in that whole article is labelling bots.
